Ft Drum

Post by akdreemer »

I created Ft.Drum as a BB just to see how the game would deal with the concept of small island forts (or forts on small island) as ships. Have not play tested the concept because I need to add some more of the islet fort in and around Manila Bay. I still have not a clue as to how to prevent Ft Drum from retiring from battle by exiting to adjacent hex or even if this might be a worthwhile pursuit.

What happens if you enter 0 under the speed setting for the class entry? I haven't tried this, but perhaps with no speed entries under max and cruise speeds it will be unable to move. The other issue is that as a ship it would be "sinkable", whereas a fort should not be.

The game has invisible tugs that will slowly move a ship with 0 speed.  I think the max is one hex a day, so it will take forever to get anywhere, but any ship will move.

I'm not sure what the point is in making a land fort a ship.  It would be immune from land combat, would retreat if defeated in a naval battle, and would be sinkable.

I did it with Witp. Never could solve the movement issue.

The purpose in my mind was to simulate the effect of Ft. Drum being an island, so therefore having to deal with it differently. It also allows for bombardment of the mainland.

One idea is to limit the combat actions it enters and damage it can make. It might be good specially if we know that most AA guns are only harbor and not in whole hex. For example in Pearl what were the air defenses of air bases? probably just a couple of machine guns.

If the idea is to make Ft. Drum separate from the land around it, look at nudging it into the next hex and put a small island in the hex, then put the Ft. Drum base on that island.

All of the Coast Defenses in Manila Bay were located on Islands. Which means, to land attack any of them you have to get your feet wet. Currently, when Manila falls, so do all the Defended Islands, which historically did not happen. Is there some way we could simulate this on the map somehow?

Which brings to the question of how can the pwhex file be modified? It seems strange that we can modify units and locations, but not intrinsic map data.

Alaskan Warrior,

My personal view is that Drum was a minor outlying fort that is already a part of either Bataan or Manila. It is not of sufficient size to warrant an invasion or a hex on its own. If you think it is not already a part of one of those hexes, then I suggest adding a CD unit to one of the hexes and giving it high morale. Pull the devices from history, and you are good to go.

While this does not address your map modification, I think it solves your issue.
