Tips for a newbie

Hey guys i am currently playing a 1000 star system game with 4 major races at war with 2 of them and the 3rd one is a ally while the 4th i just obliterated with my world destroyer super project i found floating in space =) (they only had 2 planets)

Anyhow i am seeing a problem with my current game i am trying to get all my ships into fleets which was easily done however only about 4 or 5 ships show up at a time and i'v been giving them 6 months each to all regroup but they just seem unable to do so. Any tips on how to get fleets of 20-40 to regroup?

All my ships were scattered accross the galaxy when i started to put them in to fleets was that a problem? thought 6 months ingame time would give them plenty of time to move to certain colonys.

Is the fleet assigned to a certain planet near the rendez-vous Point  ?
