Bloody Omaha AAR (ish)

Post by DampSquib »

This is 1 map from BO..(map Gavrus.) Me the Germans VS the AI US.

The map started very quiet nothing was on screen or the mini map.
I decided to try my luck & shoot at the Church building to see if any one was at home.
I used a ( SS 88mmPak43 ) - Left Yellow dot).
At the same time 2 Shock teams sneaked there way from the south to the edge of the tree line.
Just in time to spot a sherman making it's way between the houses, followed by a Half Track.
I brought my Jagdpanther to greet it (purple dot + line south)....it did the job, killing it quickly then takeing out the crew.
The left (SS 88mmPak43 ) would kill the Half Track...then i turned the AT on the houses.
At the same time my Shock troops fired into the buildings as well, killing off the remainig AI Infantry in that area.
In the centre Coming from the North were 2 teams of soliders..they would come down the hedgerow white X's.
I decided to harras them with 80mm GrW Mortar rounds. Then finish them off with the Jagdpanther.
That first shot into the church hit something...i could hear the yells..Bliss.
This got the attention of a Sherman Calliope....my shock troops & SS sMG34 are placed right infront of it's LOS...in the trench. ( 2 right blue dot's ).
The shock troops have AT capability but they could not harm it.
Luckly it came out a little to far. I roasted it with a 88mm Pak 43..right yellow dot.
At the same time that started to move a M 36 Jackson popped on the mini map right bellow my Konigstiger ..( Purple dot North + line ).
It moved south east,i followed it with the Konigstiger..it would stop just inside the opening of 2 hedgerows.
I caught up to it..much to my surprise a Sherman 76 was there as well...i have no idea where the hell it came from.
The Konigstiger would kill the Jackson & then the Sherman, just in time as it was trying to drill my 2 teams in the trench.
Now a Pershing came into view ( Northwest red dot + line )....it started to move towards the NorthWest VL.
Placed there are Top NorthWest 1 SS sMG34..below that a Pionierebefehl Team (Engineers).
To the right of the SS sMG34 are my Zugfuhrer & a Schutzen team (rifle Inf).
The Pershing would come down the middle it would take too long to get a tank there in time.
It fired at the sMG34 team..some wounded but none dead..saved by a tree. Haha for pine!!
I had snuck my Pionierebefehl team close enough to have a pop at it they let rip doing sod all.
It ripped them apart ..i brought the Schutzen team down near it.
Hopeing to pull it's attention away from the Pionierebefehl...no luck this time.
The four leaf clover had run out..they were all killed.
A few of the Schutzen group died but most of them survived.
It made no difference the Pershing would not take the VL..as the timer ran out..a win for me!!

Beeblebrox's Bastards, determined to establish a beachhead to the North of Omaha Beach, rallied themselves for a pincer movement to try and surround the enemy and push inland. The right and left flanks launched their attacks in a pincer movement hoping to catch the enemy off guard. But whoa! Where did all that German armour come from? It's a good thing that this is not open country so we can get to engage at close quarters and have some chance of taking them on equal terms.

Sallying forth with 2 Sherman 76's, a Command Sherman 75, and some beefy Assault squads, they plunged into the fray. The infantry tasked with securing the buildings while the armour manouevered to try and engage and nuetralise the German armour. Holy crap! 2 Panthers, 2 PzKwIV's, and a JagdPanzer IV. All quite capable of demolishing our small troop of Shermans. Suddenly the air was rent with screaming and the sound of High Explosive. The infantry had walked into a trap and soon were getting seven tons of crap beaten out of them. The Battlegroup Commander, not shy of getting into the thick of it also took a pasting, Commander Beeblebrox himself only just surviving, getting wounded in the process.

Almost outnumbered 2 to 1 in armour, the 76's stood back and tried to take out any Panzers that came into sight, but we had to take the initiative if we were to secure the objective. The Panthers were going to be trouble if we could only take them head on. Eventually, all the German armour was taken out, but at the cost of both Sherman 76's. The Command Sherman survived and was able to turn the tide by providing close infantry support which finally broke the remaining enemy who fled the battle. We took a a mauling though!

Gradually the pincer closed. Facing more Panthers, PzKwIV's, and a King Tiger! Fortunately, the King Tiger decided to start one of the battles in the centre of a small village occupied by infantry, and with hedgerows all around, we were able to bring up 2 Pershings and a Command Sherman 76 to within 50 metres before it spotted us, and by then it was too late. Ka-boom! With that, the enemy's enthusiasm seemed to vanish, and the final battle to close the ring was complete. Now our forces could take on the surrounded enemy Sectors with less risk, and able to rest the Units that had taken so much punishment during the engagements.

Beeblebrox's Bastards dug in to lick their wounds, and prepare for more action to come...

I also noticed German rifle squads from 1945 available as well in the force pool.

Yes, there is a relationship between some of the settings in the setup.txt file on the Server, and the way CoI is configured when building the CCStart File, and the way the CCStart file is created is important too. The influence is (CC) System wide, so as this is a Mod that is being used, any Core file changes may impact as to what happens in the Campaign.

Yes, I agree. The only show stopper so far is the Map thing (causing the Java Exception).

I wondered if you had any thoughts about play balance? My first impressions of the early stages are that the Axis Battlegroup can get weighted too strongly and perhaps there should be an adjustment to this?

Within a few battles after hitting the beaches, the Axis had multiple Panthers, PzkwIV's, JagdPanzer IV's, and even a King Tiger (I never saw more than 1 though). My feeling is that is is bit early to get such heavyweight Axis Forces. But that's only my own feeling.

What does anyone else think? (about play balance in general)...

It's a lovely Strat Map. Who made it? I like the look of that sort of thing for my own developments...

A quick look at the CoI timeline looks like it needs work on too... hence the early arrival of reinforcements.
