Campaign Map

Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem is a highly enhanced new release of Close Combat, using the latest Close Combat engine with many additional improvements. Its design is based on the critically acclaimed Close Combat – A Bridge Too Far, originally developed by Atomic Games, as well as the more recent Close Combat: The Longest Day. This is the most ambitious and most improved of the new Close Combat releases, but along with all the enhancements it retains the same addicting tactical action found in the original titles! Close Combat – Last Stand Arnhem comes with expanded force pools, reserve & static battlegroups, a troop point buying system, ferry and assault crossings, destructible bridges, static forces and much more! Also included in this rebuild are 60+ battles, operations and campaigns including a new enhanced Grand Campaign!

Progress so far...

I lost 4 armour in Valkenswaar (yellow square) and the area is still contested (green/red stripes) and just won at Best (blue square) though it was over VERY quickly - the Germans decided to blow the bridge and they disbanded....but I had only killed maybe 8 soldiers (2 units)...they still had a fair few (another 6 or 7 units I think) - seemed to blow the bridge awful quickly.

By the way, in the video you showed on Youtube you saw a bridge being blown...I did NOT see the bridge at Best being blown.

RE: best - Were you looking at the bridge when it blew up? I don't have a battle in a GC lined up at Best so I can't tell you what the timer length is but I do recall it being fairly short. You have to move quickly. IIRC it's around 4 minutes possibly less.

I'm going to play BEST again...'cos I'm not entirely sure the briefing mentioned any time to get to the bridge...and if it's scripted that the bridge will blow in a set amount of time then the player should know about it. I'm crap at the CC games at the best of times, so I play most of my games sneaking about or moving (seldom selecting move fast) and I use overwatch tactics...so I was never going to get to that bridge using those tactics.

And I don't mind changing the tactics...just so I know I have to.

Get to each bridge as fast as you can and control the Bridge VL's to prevent bridge demolition.

if you take your time you will regret the results.

mmm....tried that on CoI, TLD and also just replayed BEST and was slaughtered. I don't understand when people say that...as soon as my troops go into the open, they are dead meat.

I must be doing something wrong. I am using suppression and smoke where possible/useful.

Try taking the northern Vls first by stealth, see what happens.

Edit: I'm not say thats right or wrong mind you, just see what happens.

Won't work...the Germans blow the bridge if they appear unnerved...the ONLY way to save that bridge is storm it...but getting your troops into a place where you have good cover fire and can do fire and manouvre is difficult.

fix bayonets and charge... ignore your wounded... just get the damned bridge!

if you wait too long the explosives get armed and then the Germans will blow if they get jittery... you must get the VL's before they can be armed.

Anyone had any success with other tactics?

I looked at them for a while from the trees.  They just sat there eating sausage and sauerkraut.  Definately not front line truppen.

One of them probably falls asleep on the plunger....

lol - well I tried again and charged - keeping .30 cal back for firing cover (though they couldn't target a lot from where they were), mortars and a bren platoon for cover...and they tore me up again. Most from the Bridge, some from the south west side. Mortars were as inaccurate and useless as any other time (though the German mortars and normally spot on).

you really are joking right ?

the AI can fire though walls, can spot you and kill you with out you being able to return fire and you say just charge the bridge ?

LOL, battle must of been boring, the AI started marching a Unit right down the middle of the road towards my MG, told the MG to fire, so what do they do ?

they start moving to the sides, finally firing once the German Troops decided walking down the road was not a good idea, of course once they hit the ground, the MG opened up and took them all out

oddly, and seen this before, assaulting a postion seems more dangerous to you, then to the enemy, you kill yourself when you assault (full squad, one enemy or so left, lot of close combat sounds, see 3 guys with Grenades fixed, and then, all of the squad but the leader is dead/major wounded)

(you know in training, they teach you to throw the Grenade, not to drop it at your feet)

Judge, My motar took out 3 enemy, the AI got one, so I think it is really more timing and when you use it, the enemy has to be moving and not down on the ground

will say, the Enemy didn't even blow the bridge when I ran this (I didn't get close, but it stand alone battle, so may not be geared the same way)

and just in case, don't take me wrong, I like what I am seeing so far

Taking some of the bridges can be hard.  "Best" is very difficult to capture in one go.  You basically have three options:

1) Take your time and work your way towards the bridge carefully over the course of several battles.  Once you're close enough, rush the bridge.  Not an option in a single battle, unfortunately.

2) Ignore the bridge and try to take out enough of the enemy teams to break their force morale.  This may even end up giving you the bridge VL and control of the bridge.

3) Charge!

With multiple 88s and lots of open ground, option 3 is tough on Best.  Killing the 88s is possible -- have one team draw the gun's fire while several others shoot up the crew -- but setting this up takes time, and the bridge timer is ticking down...

As the germans, can you still choose when to blow a bridge?

Yes a human German player will always have the choice to destroy a bridge but only if he controls the bridge VL(s) and after the "arming" period expires.

Am I missing something or have you restricted the buying of other units in this scenario in the GC played as the Allies ?

It also looks like the Paras start out with less then a full team ??

One other item to keep in mind is that the period of time to arm the explosives changes with the difficulty level....

I couldnt save SOn´s and Best's bridges.....Even with lots of smoke and mortar fire......

Really, really tough on veteran setting......

At Best's bridge, I can get near it but never on time......Those 88 are deadly.......But where is my air support? They never show up.....
