I'm in one war too many as is, (interglactic and SPWaW) but maybe I can help with the unknown part.

Start the game and select: Play by Email. This goes into the screne you have used to start everything. Go into preferences and set your parameters, including points, and exit back to this screen. Then there is a listing for "Generator" if I remember the wording -- I'm at work, but you would think I could remember after all this time. The manual also has a good set up list.

This opens a rather full screen. Here you select the sides, type of battle and nationalities for the players (and number of players for advance war mongering). You set both sides to be played, purchased and deployed by humans. This is the same as for generating random scenarios (I think) except you use humans for both sides.

The rest of the screen is used to set the map size or load a saved map, set visibility, time, weather, etc, ad nauseum. Don't forget to check the date, as that sets the available equipment. Then, when you have all that set up, you hit Continue and the computer will generate or set things according to your parameters.

If you are player One (advised that the person setting up the game be Player 1 -- but not necessary, I believe), you purchase and deploy. (You can not save until after deployment is finished.) Exit deployment and it goes through the save routine. Zip, and send the files in the save location (email folder) to your opponant and he/she/it buys, deploys and returns the game. (Preplotted artillery will fire when Player Two exits the deploy screen.

It is best to agree to all the parameters in advance, of course, including the save slot number. The reason for this is that the game uses the same slot on both computers and you wipe out a saved game if it's in the same slot.

Then you take your turn as normal, and at the end of each turn it saves the game. You can exit and go back in later, and it saves the turn where you are. When you finish the turn the computer does the artillery,m etc, and saves before exiting. I found that waiting a minute before leaving the game reduces the number of times my opponent get file errors opening my files. Zip and send. Repeat as needed to kill opponant.

The button is called "Battle". ;) To avoid confusion...

The person setting up the game is automatically Player 1. Player 1 will purchase only, then pick a password. After the password, he will email files to player 2. Player 2 will purchase, pick a password, and deploy. The turn will then be sent to player 1, who will deploy. At the end of his deploy, the preplotted arty will go off. It will then ask for the Player 1 password, and he will take his turn immediately. You can save during deploy by hitting the exit game button. The game will ask if you wish to quit and play later. Hit yes, and the game saves.

Okay, so I was sort of right... I've only done it a few times myself. But when I have deployed my units and tried to exit to do something else, I received the message that it would not save during deploment. Whether this is true only for Player Two I don't know, but I have had this happen more than once while setting up for an email game.
