Why this game has promise

Tutorial scenario – St Vith

I ordered the 318th to form up and attack through the German front line from a position 1Km South East of Steinbruck, to move across the Our and seize Steinbruck for follow up forces.

To aid them I attached B Battery, 489th. Their .50 and 37mm guns would give some much needed heavy firepower.

The 51st would form up a klick West of the 318th and conduct a standard assault, in Successive lines towards Steinbruck. The tree line between the 51st and the 318th demarcated their Area of responsibility.
To the rear the 35th Armd battalion were to move into a position South of the 51st, the plan being that they would pass the lines of 318th and the 51st, once the Our had been forced and attack towards Lommersweiler.

Battle commences.

The 51st form up and start to advance as do the 318th. B battery, 489th joins the fray with the 318th and the infantry start to advance.
Within 5 minutes I start to see the 318th stall against identified companies of the 27th Fusiliers.

I order B Battery to advance past the German front line and engage 2nd Company 27th Fusiliers from their rear, hoping that this would force the 2nd to disengage and move out of the line of advance of the 318th, hopefully forcing them into the 51st and the forming up 35th.

After the order was given I just had to sit and watch to see if they would move past the enemy and get the stalled 318th going again.

In case B battery could not make the move and engagement I started to think about committing a company from the 35th to the 318th. But I did not want to disrupt the move of the 35th for a situation that may not exist in 30 minutes. What to do?

In the 3 minutes I had taken to contemplate this order, B battery, God bless ‘em, moved 200m of the rear of the German 2nd/27th and had forced them to displace.
The 318th started to pick themselves up from their holding position and started to advance.

Game on.

No hexes, no CRT and no adding the 489th to give a +2 to the dice roll.

I asked a unit to go somewhere and I prayed they did it while I formulated a backup plan in case they didn’t.

I love boardgames and standard hex based wargames but this is a magnitude leap in Operational wargaming.

Get into it and it will reward you.
