AE in the land of the midnight sun - Hort (A) vs Koontz (J)

Post by Hortlund »

So, Ive finally found some time for another game. This time my opponent will be a fellow swede, which should make for some faster gameplay with an opponent in the same timezone. Koontz also insisted on 2-day turns, which should make the game flow even faster.

Scenario 1, PDU on, normal houserules etc. One thing though, I wanted to try the "no sweeps above best mvr-band+1"-rule, so we are playing with that one also.

Since AAR-starts are a dime a dozen on this forum, I wont bore you with repeats of the first PH strike etc. Lets just say the japs attacked, it was completely unfair, and now we are at war.

Ive decided to try something new in Malaya. For some reason, Koontz has decided to land on Kuantan with all his troops. The exact reason for this escapes me, since it seems to combine two bad consequences. He lands far enough from Singapore to be able to cut anything off, and he has to walk through a jungle trail.

Ive decided to defend these two hexes, since they are jungle-rough and thus provides my defensive forces with a nice x3 bonus. I also think he wont be expecting any defence in the middle of Malaya. Im moving most of the units from Singapore to Temlouh, and most of the units from Alor Star to the jungle hex on the railline. Im also moving some small units into flanking positions along the trails so they can slip in behind him if he is not careful.

At the same time, I am flying all airunits to Palembang and Batavia and I am reinforcing Palembang with units from Java. If spotted, that should create the impression that Im going to do a Fortress Sumatra-defence.

Hm my cunning plan to defend the interior was foiled by a second landing at Mersing. So he has landed two 900-AV stacks at Kuantan and Mersing. Looks like the Malaya campaign will be a short one.

Something might be afoot in the south pacific. This seems to be a small japanese invasion force heading for Canton or Pago-Pago or some other small island. Unfortunately they manage to stumble right across Lex and E heading towards Sydney. Ive ordered both CVs to turn around and intercept the Jap convoy.

This might cause me to change my strategic plans for the CVs. I had planned to move them to Australia and then on towards the NEI. But if there is a jap TF down here already, he will probably try some aggressive move down here.

I had originally intended to leave the south pac alone and pull all reinforcements to PH instead. Now I might decide to go the southern route and reinforce Pago-Pago, Fiji and New Zealand instead. I dont think I need to fear a PH invasion anyway, he is heavily committed in the SRA so I doubt he has the forces for a centpac adventure.

Marines and aircraft ordered to Pago-Pago and Fiji.

4 more turns have passed. Some highlights.

Air war
I set up an AVG ambush over the French base on the Chinese coast. I had evacuated some of the Hong Kong defenders here, and the transport ships seemed to draw the attention of some Nells and Bettys based at Formosa. I flew in the AVG and the trap worked. I managed to shoot down roughly 10 Nells, 10 Bettys and 10 Sonias for no own loss. That is good, I want to get his high-exp naval pilots.

I also set up an ambush over Manila. Most Japs move on with their fighters after they think they have neutralized the PI airforce. I had moved out all my P40s to Mindanao to keep them safe and returned them to Manila. I managed to shoot down 10-15 Sallys on port strike.

Before this turn he only had 9 air losses to my 60, now the score is 65-55 in his favor.

Naval war
He landed at Pago Pago! A small nav guard unit was landed by two CMs and two AKs escorted by two DDs. Fortunately enough my troops held and Ive started to fly in elements of the 8th NZ Bde from Suva just to protect the base from falling to an unlucky dieroll later. Both my CVs are in this region but for some reason he managed to slip through my searches.

This concerns me a great deal. If he is this aggressive (going for Pago Pago without first taking Tarawa or Canton Island) then more can surely be expected. Im wondering if this is the KBs next port of call. Ive been trying to calculate the days it would take for the KB to go back to Truk to rearm and then head this way and believe I can expect the KB in 4-5 days in a worst case scenario. I dont know what troops he would bring though.

I have to win the naval battle to protect Suva and Pago Pago though. My reinforcements have just left San Diego and will not arrive for a month or so. Im moving the remaining surface forces from Pearl down to this region.

This will be a tough balance between defending Pago Pago, which in my opinion is a key base for the US. Without it, the convoy routes get twice as long. And not committing my forces into a battle on Jap terms.

Ground war
He landed at Palembang but was repulsed. Ive sent two Dutch Regiments to Palembang, and two indian brigades will start unloading at Oosthaven tomorrow. This is not Fortress Sumatra, since I will not commit Force Z here, nor will I commit the entire airforce here. But it is a Fortress Sumatra-light. Right now I have 260 AV at Palembang, and Im flying in more everyday from Java.

Things are heating up in the South Pacific.

In this picture you can see the KB together with what I suspect is an invasion fleet. As you can see I have a CV TF ready to intercept. The CVs will of cource not be tangling with the KB, instead I will try to slip in behind the Jap carriers and see if he has any stragglers in his invasion fleet. There usually are... support ships, ships carrying baseforces, fuel and supply etc.

My CVs will head north and hide in the islands around Espiritu Santu.

The two SCTFs I have consists of all in all 4 CAs 3 CLs and 10 DDs. They will take up positions to try to intercept his troop transports before they land.

I have precious few troops on Fiji. Just the 8th NZ Bde at Suva, together with some US artillery and an engineer bn I brought from Auckland.

I should not complain I suppose. We must have eaten up alot of ops-points for the CV here. Weird to see the Akagi in a single CV-TF. I think that is unwise as the Japanese player.

Another succesful interception of the Fiji invasion force. These too are turned back by our attack..

RE: AE in the land of the midnight sun - Hort (A) vs Koontz (J)

Post by Hortlund »

The day breaks and finds us in a very peculiar position. KB seems to have withdrawn north, leaving the transports very vunerable to counterattack.

As you can see, the Lexington and Enterprise are now in a position between the KB and the troop transports. I have no doubt that the KB will sprint south to cover the invasion of Fiji. In fact, the Jap moves in this situation is pretty easy to predict. He will run the KB south to cover his ships and the invasion. The Jap transports will either move north to the protection (cautious) of the KB or south towards Suva (agressive). The Japanese cover force (the CAs) are horribly out of position though.

I doubt another opportunity like this will present itself in this war though. I just have to try to intercept his transports. If I run my CVs south, I should stay at least 10 hexes south of the KB. There are 12 hexes between my CVs and the KB right now. I am also pretty sure I have not been spotted. If I move south, my aircraft should be able to launch against the transports without being in range for the Jap carriers.

At the same time, I will send in two surface combat TFs to try and intercept the KB on its likely route south. I think it is a reasonable order, to try to intercept the Jap carriers or the invasion fleet, despite the risk of running into a KB airstrike. I am putting 2 CAs and 5 CLs into harms way this turn, but I just have to try to take out his invasion fleet when he has separated the ships from their escorts like this.

All in all 10 954 Jap casualties are reported for this day. I have not summed up all the ships he lost, but I think its fair to say that he has lost most of his troop-lifting capacity in the SouthPac for a while.

The plan I outlined worked perfectly. My surface combat TFs managed to intercept the Jap transports, and when Lexington and Enterprise swung south, they managed to execute two near-perfect strikes on the completely unprotected transport ships. The KB is too far up north as can be seen. The KB in turn makes short work of the surface combat TF I had up nort to delay the Jap carriers. It worked, but it was very costly for the northern groups.

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.

RE: AE in the land of the midnight sun - Hort (A) vs Koontz (J)

Post by Hortlund »

Im going to skip a few days now to catch up.

Short summary of what happened in January 1942.

South Pacific
Japs managed to land at Nadi, the base next to Suva and capture it. I had nothing there except for the static baseforce. All in all, 3 units of approx 150 AV got ashore.

After striking the Jap carriers, Lex and E went to Melbourne to refuel and replenish ammo. They were pursued by the KB who did portstrikes on Auckland and Sydney, sinking a handful of transports. On the way back to Pago-Pago after deciding that the coast was clear from the KB, Lex and E stumbled upon a Jap AO-TF consisting of 4 AOs and 3 CAs. All ships were sunk.

Saratoga came into the battle while the KB was portstriking Auckland. Sara snuck in from Canton Island and managed to finish off some stragglers. Travelling with Sara was a surface combat TF centered around CA Indianapolis and CL St Louis. This SCTF intercepted a support TF consisting of AKEs, ARs, AGs, AVs, ACMs and two AS. Most if not all of these ships were sunk. Putting a huge dent in the Jap logistics chain.

Returning to Pearl, Saratoga took two torpedo hits from a submarine and will spend the next 200 days in drydock. Another heavy loss was when a tanker TF was intercepted off Pago-Pago by a Jap CL+DDs.

Meanwhile I have reinforced Pago-Pago with the 25th US Div and some assorted units. I think Pago is safe now, considering that the Japs have practically no transports or warships left in the pacific theater right now. What remains is the KB and a handful of DDs and one BB.

Phillipines
We have withdrawn to Clark. I have 1300 AV there and we have repulsed three Jap attacks, all in all, the Japs have lost something around 10 000 casualties here.

Malaya
I am still holding him at Temlouh after defeating two attacks. The Imperial Guards are marching down the railline and will soon run into my defensive positions at the rough-jungle hex next to Temlouh.

Palembang
He has landed, but not attacked yet. I have a little over 600 AV at Palembang behind lvl 3 forts. I unleashed the mighty Dutch airforce on the transports after he landed and sank 4-5 xAKs.

Overall
He has stalled pretty much everywhere. The KB has vanished after the failed invasion of Fiji. I have no idea whether they will return or go to the NEI. The only reasonable thing to do right now for the Japs is to go back to the basics. Use all forces available to clear the SRA and then see what can be salvaged.

I sense some frustration in my opponent. He is throwing his forces again and again at Clark for example, despite taking 3000+ casualties he tries again two days later. He is also very brave with his bombers, sending in unescorted bombers to attack various landunits in Malaya and China. I try to set up CAP-traps now and again, but still he keeps on coming.

The most important thing in the first three months of war for Japan is to secure the SRA. All other objectives are distant seconds to this objective. In this game, Japan has sent the KB and at least one division of infantry deep into the southern pacific in an attempt to secure a fairly useless island far away from anything. Granted Fiji is vital to the allied SLOCs, but I dont think it is wise to pursue secondary goals as japan before the primary goal is achieved. It splits forces and makes it easier to stall the speed of the jap advance.

He has also used 80% of his Bettys and Nells in the Phillipines to ground strike a local counterattack I did with 3 PA divisions. Sure, he killed the PA divisions, but the fact that he diverted his airforce from Clark and Manilla meant that I could fortify Clark up to lvl3 forts. He is paying for that right now.

Same in Malaya. He is groundstriking my defences at Temlouh everyday with IJA bombers and some Bettys. Why? I have less than 250 AV at Singapore and he could easily bypass Temlouh. Instead he choses to fight at the place I have chosen under the terms I have chosen. I am defending in jungle rough with almost all my landforces in the Malaya penninsula, and he is coming at me where I am strongest.

Palembang...it will be interesting to see what odds he gets there. Personally I would have landed at Oosthaven and marched up the road instead.

I have begun planning an offensive operation to unhinge him further. I will reinforce Suva first to defeat the invasion there. After that I will launch an offensive in the south/southwest pacific. This will mostly be aimed at feeding his frustration and in that way perhaps drive him to make mistakes.

It should take 2 months or so to get everything in place, and then I will attack. I estimate to have 4CVs, 8BBs, 400 land based aircraft and 3 divisions to throw into the fray.

January 22nd 1942. The KB returns to Fiji, and it could not have come at a worse time.

As you can see, I have a troop convoy about to unload at Suva. Just one hex off. I believe they will be able to unload most of the troops. I have 8th USMC Rgt and Ist Amphib Corps HQ on board. They are escorted by a separate SCTF consisting of two heavy cruisers and the amphib TF includes an Omaha class CL and 8 DDs.

I did not expect the KB to arrive already. Question is what now...
If he follows his previous pattern, the Jap CVs will park one or two hexes off Nadi. I will form two SCTFs to try to intercept the KB here, while the transports are ordered to Suva and unload. I desperately need the supplies and the 8th Marines on the ground there. My CVs will swing north and west to get in behind the enemy carriers, there they will look for transports. If all goes as planned we might have a very interesting tactical situation tomorrow.

I have also flown in one Wildcat wing from Pago-Pago...I figure it is better than nothing. They will be on CAP over Suva while the transports unload.

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

RE: AE in the land of the midnight sun - Hort (A) vs Koontz (J)

Post by Hortlund »

Today we really traded blows.

The first day saw failed surface action from my two SCTFs. Then the KB cleaned out the seas around Fiji. My Wildcats did put up a fight and we managed to shoot down 15-something Vals and Kates, but we were unable to protect the convoy unloading at Suva. All transports were sunk and they had not unloaded any heavy equipment. Losses were severe in support troops and guns. But we did get the sharp end of the regiment ashore, around 150 AV or so.

By that time, the turn looked grim. Then, a sub put a torpedo into the Akagi (unconfirmed). But what really changed was when my carriers swung around in behind the KB and found a really big troop transport. The Jap losses seem to be at least a regiment. Meanwhile 25th Army division finished unloading at Pago-Pago. Im starting to feel more secure there now with over 500 AV.

Perhaps he will take Fiji in the end, but the cost for it will be heavy indeed.
