Pin Ups in the Pacific - Da Big Babes 2x2 - Allies Only please

Post by vettim89 »

Well we are gonna take Da Big Babes Mod out for a spin as a 2x2.

Japan will be played by Kitikami and guctony. As this is a closed AAR, if either of those people are reading this, please depart.

The Allies will be played by Nomad (Ken) and myself (Tim). Ken will be handling the CBI, RN, NEI until they fall, and USSR when/if it becomes active. I (Tim) will be handling the Pacific including Oz.

As to the title of the AAR - hey, it's Da Babes mod!!!!!!

First the HR's which are minimal

1. No Strategic Bombing before 1944 either side
2. PP must be paid for units to cross national boundaries
3. No 4-E NavAttack below 15 k
4. Escalating Sweep alt: no fighter sweeps higher then the ALT with the second best MVR value

On point #2 - the Japan side has agreed to consider Akyab an Indian base for the purpose of this HR

For now I will only comment on what happened/is happening on my side of the board. I will let Ken comment on what is going on in his AOO.

I will not post Combat Reports except when events dictate. This is one of those times. It appears only 4 CV were in the PH strike force. I am not positive about that but the info line only fed me Shokaku, Kaga, Akagi, and Soryu as sq. names. Could be FOW. If that is indeed accurate, then where are the other two? Could they be positioned SW of the HI trying to intercept Lex/Ent? Or perhaps in the Gilberts anticipating a move on my part to interfere with invasions there? Or maybe they are heading to the SRA to support a lightning move there? Hmmmm. Nonetheless, all the Vals were on AF attack. Despite the pounding, the Hawaiian AF is in better shape than I expected with nearly 80 flyable P-40's. Here's the report:

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 54
B5N2 Kate x 72
D3A1 Val x 135

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
B5N2 Kate: 2 destroyed, 14 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Warhawk: 7 destroyed on ground
PBY-5 Catalina: 10 destroyed on ground
A-20A Havoc: 4 destroyed on ground
B-18A Bolo: 2 destroyed on ground
P-36A Mohawk: 3 destroyed on ground
B-17D Fortress: 3 destroyed on ground
SBD-1 Dauntless: 3 destroyed on ground
O-47A: 1 destroyed on ground
R3D-2: 1 destroyed on ground
F4F-3 Wildcat: 1 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships
CM Oglala
BB West Virginia, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires
BB Pennsylvania, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 2
CL St. Louis, Torpedo hits 1
BB California, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 2
AV Curtiss, Torpedo hits 1
DM Montgomery
BB Tennessee, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CL Raleigh, Bomb hits 1, on fire
BB Oklahoma, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
AV Wright
BB Maryland, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 3, on fire
BB Nevada, Torpedo hits 1
BB Arizona, Torpedo hits 1
DD Jarvis, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
CA New Orleans, Torpedo hits 1

Allied ground losses:
40 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Airbase hits 40
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 219
Port hits 2
Port fuel hits 3

Only Tennesee is in a state I consider unmovable with a max speed of 6 kts. As this was a pretty poor showing, I am anticipating a "Day 2". So everything that can move is formed up and moved to Lihue, Lanai, Kona, etc with auto disband orders. So there should be no TF's at sea in the area and the ships will be spread out over 4 or 5 ports. Hopefully, this will cut back on the damage at least some.

I know some may call my dispersal move detailed above as gamey. Well considering this, I don't feel too bad about that. There are three IJN SCTF each with at least ten ships blockading Manila Bay. I am sending everything scrambling anyway - they can't get all of them. If I don't move them now, they will surely die later.

Baby KB is in the Celebes Sea as is at least one more SCTF. Somehow, Houston and Boise both got missed even though they were right in the crosshairs. Only landins in my AOO were apparent paradrops on Aparri (which fell) and Tuguegarao (which barely held). SIGINT tells me the Japanes are on their way to Maubin which is just SE of Manilla. SO far our opponents seem pretty aggressive. Ken can fill you in on why I think that is true

I am starting a BigBabes PBEM right now so will be following this AAR. There was an early AAR by Guctony and he appeared to be very aggressive. Expect rapid expansion. Good luck and may the wind be behind you!

As my avatar show, I am well into pinus. [:)]

Well, one turn in the books and I have already made one serious error. I forgot that the first turn only has one Naval Movement phase and so Force "Z" moved to Mersing and stayed to get torpedoed. Drat!!

But there is this to help console me:

Our opponents have started pretty aggressive and we will have to scramble a bit. As usual, I am moving all of the fuel I can load to Perth. The ships will be split there with some returning to India, some staying and some moving to the West Coast. A landing at Kendari was probably a bit far into Dutch territory, but we didn't really set house rules for that, so I will deal with it. I have a CL/DD SCTF set at full speed and I think it might get there next turn and Baby KB is not in position to interfere.

Tim seems to think that only 4 CVs were in the PH strike, but there were 135 Vals attacking, which should be all on 6 CVs ( about 24 each ). We will see in the coming days. Here is the view around the Celebes.

In Malaya there were landings at both Kota Bharu and Kuantan. I am not sure, but there might be a Mersing landing in the near future. I am moving the second AUS INF Bde to help cover Mersing.

Well there are several ways to determine the exact composition of the PH Strike Force. This is one of them! So it is indeed six CV's which makes one wonder where the Kate were on the PH strike. Perhaps he is saving them for a potential strike against my CV's. Sorry but my CV's are far far away right now and are getting farther and farther away by the minute. So KB hit PH again and again concentrated on the AF. BB Tennesee took a few more 250 KG bomb hits and is really no worse for the wear. Unfortunately there were only 4 confirmed kills but about 30 a/c were damaged. The AF is in bad shape; my only consolation is that he will eventually run out of sorties.

My Naval forces all pick up and move elsewhere. Its like a giant shell game right now. I did sink a midget sub in PH. One group of DD's is going to break at max speed for the WC. Everybody else is staying in the general vacinity until I am sure KB is gone. I am asembling the first convoy of troops to be transferred to the HI but am waiting for the "all clear" signal

In the PI, my escape plan worked almost flawlessly. I sent a few of the AKL and the YO that have very short legs directly at the IJN. I figure getting these guys out was going to be about impossible anyway so why not use them as bait. It worked as the three SCTF did not react at all and everybody else is heading to various points about the map. The three Phillipine PT's impaled themselves on the IJN for no hits (daylight attack). One of the S-Boats missed and got roughed up a bit. Boise is almost to Java and Houston is at Balikpapan. Where she is picking up the four-pipers before heading south.

Last point is that the RAF and USAAC had a good day with a combined total of 43 Betty/Nell shot down today!!!!!![X(]

9 December 1941

Won't steal Ken's thunder but there is a lot of fun going on done near Singers. KB has retired west and is approximately 250 nm NE of Johnston Atoll. I do not trust our fine opponents intentions. I fully expect to see a return. While that may not happen, it is always best to prep for the worth case scenario. WIth KB at its present location, I can send all the lesser damaged ships east. The bulk of this TF is headed to the ECUSA. Because of KB's withdraw, very little combat on my side of the map.

One thing that hasn't happened is that I have not spotted a single IJN submarine in my AOO. My guess is that there is a wolfpack headed towards teh WCUSA. Here is how I have/will deal with this:

* Large TF's formed on 8 Dec. bound for Anchorage. My goal was to basically get enough up there quickly so I won't have to worry about it for a while

* 12 DD's sent from PH to WC for use as escorts and ASW TF

* Anything with a DC on it is at sea in hopes of building some crew EXP.

* All ContUS patrol a/c are on 100% training for NavSearch. I figure I got about a week before at least some of these guys will have to start looking for the bad guys.

* All shipping is being moved to SF or LA except for a small amount at Seattle to manage NoPac's needs. My figuring is that at this stage I cannot adequately cleans the approaches to every port on the WC.

* A small amount of shipping being sent to Panama and then ECUSA to provide for some lift operating from the relative safety of the EC/Oz route even if much longer.

The PI exodus is ongoing with another half dozen or so ships sinking this turn. The few high value units will be departing soon: two TK, two AO, and an xAP with Asiatic Fleet aboard

They brought a lot. There is 2 BBs in that TF, so I do not have any SC ships to
counter with( due to my ignorance on turn 1 [:@] )

I see an anchor symbol at Miri, so I will try to do a port attack from Samarinda.
Plus I have a British DD that will bombard Miri this turn. And I have a CL/DD bombarding
Kendari ( which I lost this turn ). I thought I had enough to hold it, but it looks like

My explanation is that there is troops inside damaged, burning ship, and they take more casualties every combat round. Even though your planes didn't attack that ship, it's still part of that TF.

10 December 1941

KB has disappeared into the mist. That said I am preparing for its return in the near future. Right now just getting the AF at PH repaired is going to be most helpful. Lots of ships and TF at sea heading for various points.

Landings: Nauru/Ocean islands are now Japanese, Kaving, Iba in the PI.

I lost the TF I was trying to sneak out of the PI with two AS and an AV - truly the only TF I really wanted to get out. Oh well, fortunes or war and all that, ya know.

I am sending some light forces at Iba that likely will get creamed but you have to do something. The landing here just like the one at Mersing was very heavy with ENG
units. I guess our opponents are not big fans of long sieges.

Only good thing that happened in my dept was that our opponents have Mavis flying NavAttack out of the Palaus. Three or four of them have been shot down over Battan in the last two turns. Not my idea of the best use of these long legged a/c.

Nomad, did you get Renown and Prince of Wales sunk on turn one?  I did too in my game with Q-Ball.  I thought our house rule prevented me from moving any ships except those "at sea," and since the BBs were at Singapore I didn't touch them.  Then when they got sunk Q-Ball laughed at me (well, it felt like he did when he asked:  "Hey, did you forget about Force Z?" I felt like he was asking: "Hey, Dumazz, what's your problem you turkey?").

Anyhow, if somebody else did something like this it will make me feel much better.  Misery loves company.  Maybe I need to find a Cubs fan to commiserate with....

Normally I would not answer for Ken but I can assure you he did not lose BC Renown on the first turn

Now, BC Repulse, well .......

Oops, I do that all the time.  I'm terrible with names.  I've had to work extra hard to avoid calling my wife by the names of former girlfriends.  It was pretty tough at first, because I really do goof alot, but after 23 years I think I've pretty much got it down.
