The Pan-Asian Empire - Rid of the western Imperialists: Shilka (J) vs. Walloc (A)

Post by Shilka »

Hello to all fellow "Japaneers". I'm going to start a new AAR about our current scen. 1 game with Walloc.

The rules we have are pretty basic, perhaps most notably PDU on and reinforcements fixed. Houserules include the following:

-No strat bombing till '43
-No 4E nav bombing under 10k
-PP needed to move units over borders
-CAP/Sweep altitude limited to plane types max. maneuver band
-Artillery bombardment used only in support of real attacks or probing

Currently the game is wandering around February 14 1942, so I'll start with making a short review showing (or telling) the most important stuff from the past to the present...

The war started with the usual main hits at PH, Clark and North Malayan airfields, and Atimonan, Vigan, Aparri, Khota Baru and Guam landings.

On Pearl Harbour, the initial strike probably bagged a couple of BB's, which didn't satisfy me, so the attack run there lasted two days, which resulted in 4 sunk BB's.  After that KB headed to support the invasion of Wake, which fell nice and clean with the support of a massive Kate bomb strike. Near the Marshall islands I got a little too eager too soon, and a bunch of cargo ships got sunk by an Allied CV that past by Tarawa. I should've waited for KB to come and cover the Tarawa invasion. Ocean and Nauru fell without sunken casualties thou, as I drove my invasion fleets (after unload) at flank speed to the NW away from the Allied CV.

In China, Hong Kong fell December 13 with the additional support of 1st. Ind. Infantry Group from Canton. The strategy on the mainland was to drive a spear NW from Sinyang towards Nanyang, and the cross-road city fell on January 6th after a massive stand-off. I quickly rushed up forts there, and the Chinese tried to counter-attack but they failed miserably getting 20k casualties vs. my 1k. Next up was the push towards Chengchow and after that Loyang. Yenan was also conquered. The combined goal of these fronts is at the current, Sian.

I have bought a garrison unit from Manchuria to free up an Infantry Mixed Brigade for better use. I have bought also tanks, which will begin a drive from Paotow in the northern desert towards the west with the objective of Lanchow and it's oil. I think the drive towards Sian and stabilising afterwards is the most critical thing to do. The region between Wuchang-Changsha-Nanchang is stabile at the moment. Ichang has been given up once, but taken back pretty soon after that as Chinese left only a small garrison. Wenchow was captured on February 14 with 3 divisions and a regiment + HQ after a very long miscalculated siege with undersized forces. Those are to travel towards Hong Kong to support the siege of Wuchow after the retreating Chinese units from Wenchow have been destroyed (hopefully).

In Malaya, it seems that the Allies had withdrawn most of the units from Singapore to somewhere (guess India). After I had control of the South China Sea and Java Sea approach by controlling NW Borneo and the airfield at Singapore had been pretty much destructed, I succesfully accelerated the conquest of Singapore by executing the Mersing landing on the first days of January. A few units were luckily also cut off in the peninsula, and Singapore fell with the first shock attack on January 10th.

The Sumatra Invasion started on January 26th directly on Palembang, which was captured 99% intact as was Djambi. Sumatra seems defended only by the initial forces, and the conquest is happening almost as fast as the troops can walk.

The invasion of Java happened January 31st with heavy cruiser, LBA fighter and CV support. By this time the allied surface vessels seem to had already withdrawn somewhere. The only thing left in the whole of DEI are some Allied PT-boats. My sub screens at Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane havent sighted a thing, except CL Sumatra was sunk by a sub near Perth. Anyway, the Java landings went mostly without resistance, except that the Dutch airforce got pretty much slaughtered trying to bomb my CV's with all of their might. I figured that the network of airfields on Java is so comprehensive, that it is pretty much useless to try supressing them all. Instead I covered my landings with LBA from Pontianak, Makassar and Palembang. First landing happened at Kalidjati with the main bulk of forces from Malaya. After that Semarang was captured by para troops, and they are to cut the island in half with support of armored and army infantry. Batavia was also captured intact. Seems that the bulk of Javanese troops are trying to fortify at the mountains in Bandowengi. The siege of that with the bulk forces was almost the first thing to start.

Image

The Philippines is the theater I have allocated the most: roughly 6 divisions worth of troops. Bataan is holding, thou it has started to show cracking as the Allied casualties exceeded my own during the last attack. After the fall of Bataan, a couple of divisions will join the siege at Bandoengi and the rest of Java, I am still pondering what should be my next target. As I have still to decide the second stage thrust, currently I am building up the Marshalls, Gilberts, Solomon Islands and SW PNG regions and sending garrison troops. Canton and Baker were also taken with the support of the main component of KB, although no contact was made with the enemy.

Air HQ's have been placed in the following bases:
In the DEI, Makassar, Kendari, Koepang and Osthaven, althou these dispositions will change after the whole DEI is cleaned up. For now they will keep any allied interventions or surface raids far away. Burma has received one to Rangoon. Solomons and PNG areas have received one in Buna and the other one to cover all the to-be-built bases on the Solomon Islands in Thousand Ships Bay. In the Marshalls and Gilberts Kwajalein has currently the one that started there, and Abemama will receive another to cover all the to-be-built Gilbert Islands from Manchukuo.

Perhaps the only major naval battle so far included combat between the Force Z and the landing at Sinkawang in the second half of December. It was a defeat for me I would say: bad luck as a destroyer hit Ise with a torp, which caused her to cripple quickly:

Task forces break off...

Luckily POW was caught by Kates from the mini KB within striking distance and was promptly sunk. CL Mauritius was caught by a sub on the way home and suffered the same fate, so the defeat was afterwards turned to one kind of "draw". Other major ship losses have been Ryuojo, which was sunk of Philippines by [8|] PBY-Catalinas. CVE Hosho also recieved a fish from a sub, but she made it to the repair dockyard.

To the Burmese theater I sent a division, couple of infantry regiments, tank regiments, HQ, aviation support and construction units. A pretty weak force at the moment, but the Allies have pretty much also left Burma. I'm sure they will be back during the year. Not quite sure yet what the strategy will be here. Consolidate & hold? If it's even possible.

February 14

Today we launched a second attack against Wuchow, dropping the forts to 1 with 2 to 1 odds:

Ground combat at Wuchow (76,57)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 21036 troops, 223 guns, 83 vehicles, Assault Value = 669

Defending force 23535 troops, 173 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 781

Japanese adjusted assault: 902

Allied adjusted defense: 433

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
      1325 casualties reported
         Squads: 1 destroyed, 83 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 62 disabled
         Engineers: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled

Allied ground losses:
      778 casualties reported
         Squads: 5 destroyed, 38 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 22 disabled
         Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled

Assaulting units:
    104th Division
    66th Infantry Regiment
    19th Ind.Mixed Brigade
    51st Recon Regiment
    23rd Army
    21st Mortar Battalion

Defending units:
    63rd Chinese Corps
    62nd Chinese Corps
    65th Chinese Corps
    2nd Prov Chinese Corps
    12th Group Army
    16th Group Army
    13th Chinese Base Force

Next turn a similiar attack will be lauched, as fatigue stayed under the 20's and disruption under 10's. In Java and the Philippines, attacks are being launched against the fortresses of Bandoeng and Bataan next turn as the bombing campaign has continued tensely through the "truce" days. Tabiteau was invaded, hopefully the dot bases around it will be captured with out the need to reload and unload again so construction can begin without hassles.

This turn the Allied subs got some hits on an SC, DD and an AMC, luckily all torps being duds.

In the Home Islands Marus are loading a newly arrived air HQ for the Gilberts and Nav guard units for the Solomons and PNG. Numerous tankers and escort ships are currently gathering at Singapore, were oil convoys will be organized from Palembang and to the HI. Brunei and Miri oil has been already hauled continously from the end of December to Cam Ranh bay. The port of Brunei has expanded to 4 and all the oil points there have been repaired. Miri currently stands at 181.

In resource hauling we have bearly managed to keep up with the demands. Resource durability has been somewhat stalemated at 76 days, thou I think it is going down little by little. We have noticed that Port Arthur is steadily gathering less resources. It is down to 61k now. I have made the 2 convoys running from there smaller, because I don't want to suck Manchukuo completely dry. The port of Fusan has also expanded to lvl 7 and is 55% towards 8.

From Sakhalin we are driving 2 convoys to Wakkanai: one from Shikuka and one from Toyohara. Shikuka will soon be a lvl 6 port and Wakkanai lvl 5. From Hokkaido we are using 4 ports and 6 convoys to drive resources and oil to Honshu.

-------
Industry
In plane production, I have chosen the Ki-44 TojoIIB and the Ki-45 KAIb Nick for research subjects for the army. It is hoped that their heavy armament can provide a match for the heavy bombers later on. The Ki-43c Oscar will be the mainstay fighter until the Nicks and Tojos arrive. After that it will be mostly them, although I might let a small number of Oscars produce as they upgrade to the IIa .

In navy fighters, it has been chosen to skip the A6M3 completely and move on to the A6M3a, as M3 doesnt have carrier capability IIRC and the M3a has a longer range. It will become the mainstay navy fighter for quite some time.

The mainstay army bomber at the moment with a production of 93/month is the IIa Sally. A small number of the first generation Helens will be produced when they arrive, but when the Helen IIa arrives, the Sallies will begin to being replaced by them mainly because of the armor. Some engine capacity will be transfered from Ha-32 to cut the everlasting shortage of Ha-35 engines.

Navy bombers will pretty much become the Nell types in time. The G3M3 matches almost the G4M2 which arrives only as late as 44/5, and the Nell does have a longer range and radar.

The recon planes will be mainly the DinahII and will upgrade to DinahIII as it becomes available. The navy recon plane will remain the C5M2 Babs until the D4Y1-C Judy becomes available. Not many of these need to be produced, as the navy groups are small and few.

The patrol craft will upgrade normally to H6K5 Mavis as it becomes available. I am pondering whether to keep the H6K5 after the H8K2 becomes available or to convert everything to it. The second generation Mavis does have almost the same range, better endurance, but fewer armament and a weaker armor. Production wise it would be wise to stay in the Mavis for the rest of the war and build them in pools.

I have expanded vehicle production a little bit and turned some armament production of. Navy yards have also seen expansion. Currently we have a reserve of 123k heavy industry points with a +2200 daily surplus.

In ship production the Mushashi and Shinano has been halted from the start. Instead the Junyo and Hiyo and 10DD's have been accelerated. In the merchant side the CVE's Unyo and Chuyo and 7TK's have been accelerated.

An excellet choice !

Absolutely agree, HIJMS SHINANO is a black beast eating H.I points.

I like your airframes preferences, I taken another decisions in my own game, but I may to say that yours like me :)

Best wishes and best of lucks !

Hi Fletcher

The decision on the Shinano was made mostly based on the info I found scouting the forum :)

Yes as such it seems a black hole, because you can get it at the earliest in May or June of 1943. And then it would have sucked up naval and HI points - a lot like you said. I would love to have an armored CV like that, but it is just to far away and I believe that the points can be used better than that.

I'm not sure wether I did right on the Mushashi, but halting it gives also long lasting endurance to accelerating other naval ships. I also figured that the Yamatos are a logistical nightmare to upkeep, and one would be enough. That said, I believe a big bunch of DD's and their torps earlier are more valuable than one mega platform.

Today we launched an airfield attack against Sian, which housed many P40E and the AVG squads. They are there no doubt to cover the Chinese ground forces which block our road to Sian. The next day we will continue bombing ground troops. Todal losses in the air and on the ground today were 10 P40E's and 5 H81-A3's vs. 4 Ki-43c's on our side. I have decided to take more veterans from the Ki-43 squads in China, as that plane really isnt armed properly to deal with them.

Allied Ships
SS KX, Torpedo hits 4,  heavy damage

SS I-159 launches 8 torpedoes at 1,000 yards

This was a second sub-on-sub attack in the game. The first happened in January 9th, when the I-154 was torped off Cam Ranh Bay. The KX was punished earlier by depth-charges at Ambon for too much snooping around and was supposedly sunk, but I guess this finished it off. Total sub losses for Japanese are PH-midgets and 3 subs vs. 12 for the Allies.

It is funny, but the sunk-list shows the SS Argonaut sunk at the exact same hex at the exact same date by an "unknown device". I am a bit confused, why it shows Argonaut sunk instead of the KX. Creepy.

I had an unknown device sink an xAP earlier, dont really know what those sinkings mean.

RE: The Pan-Asian Empire - Rid of the western Imperialists: Shilka (J) vs. Walloc (A)

Post by Shilka »

I am thinking that the end days of Bataan are ticking now, as the last combat report showed a (-) supply for the defender. That would release roughly 2500AV. I have another +500AV I was going to send to Java, but I think it won't be needed there. Once Java has fallen, I will probably send the two divisions and engineers to Burma to help out at fortifying it and building airbases. I really dont see the point of pushing beyond Burma to India, as the allies can rail in tons of stuff from the other side of the country, and I presume my supply wouldn't flow thru the jungle very quickly at least. Anyone have experience of supplying Imphal and the nearby bases?

I am not very keen on pushing into Australia, thou I guess the NW bases of Exmouth and Port Hedland need to be taken to keep an eye on the west coast. I wont commit very large forces here, maybe a few construction units, av-support and a small garrison as they are behind a large desert. If the Allies are coming by land, army bombers will slow them down all they can.

That leaves the options of Suva and Noumea, it seems the Allies are building both up. My sub screens there havent detected any convoys in a while thou. I was pondering that Noumea would be easier to invade first, though I hold Fiji more important as controlling only Noumea wouldn't slow down the Fiji build-up at all. Whatever the case, I need to do it before the end of March (wasn't that the last month of the invasion bonus?). That will be a real tight call, I will need all the troops from PI and the extra 500AV and a heck of a lot of shipping and of course KB which is split at two in Singapore and Truk atm.

RE: The Pan-Asian Empire - Rid of the western Imperialists: Shilka (J) vs. Walloc (A)

February 19 - 20

February 19, a great day for the Empire. The defenders of Bataan have subdued to their stronger ones.

The forces are ordered to walk towards Manila for rest, as minesweepers and transports are steaming towards the Philippines. The High Command has decided that the next objective will be the Fiji-islands. A convoy is hauling fuel and supplies from Truk to Rabaul continously and the port there is being expanded towards level 5 for the future major operation. Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku are east of the Solomon Islands in the open sea to decrease the chance of sub detection. They are to support a pre-invasion of Luganville, after that Tanna and Efate, which are to be built up as airfields. Numerous engineer and Naval guard units are heading from Manchukuo and Home Islands for executing this operation. It is critical to first supress the airfield at Noumea to allow the undisturbed landings in the New Hebrides. After we have a foot hold, the main landing to the base next to Suva will set sail and be supported by LBA from the newly built airfields and with CV-support.

Kaga, Akagi, Shoho, Zuiho and Hosho are currently starting a sweep in the Indian Ocean (which got a little bit delayed because the fuel didnt move from Cam Ranh to Singapore as I had hoped). After that they will steam towards Truk and Rabaul and join with the rest of the carrier force.

In Burma, we have captured Magwe, Meiktila and Mandalay without resistance. The drive will continue towards Lashio and Myitkyina as Burma awaits reinforcements from Java which will hopefully subdue soon enough. Build-up has been noted at Cox's Bazaar and Chittagong. Last turn our Netties sortied to Chittagong and tried to torp the transports, but failed to hit anything.

The Kirishima, Mutsu and Yamashiro are currently trying to sneak an bombardment into Darwin, which we believe to be housing B17 Forts and P40E fighters. The airfield at Koepang is finally up and running and will support them if they get close enough undetected. After that they will head to Rabaul to join the cruisers Takao, Atago, Mikuma and Furutaka in support of the coming major offensive.

In China, a major force of both sides is beginning to gather in the forest 120 miles south-east from Sian. A few aviation units have been bought from Manchukuo to support housing of a few more Sally Sentais from the Philippines to China to support the offensive.

Under the sea, the I-28 succesfully torped the DD Aylwin SW of Pearl Harbour and a long counter attack was experienced with one hit (FLT 20). The tracker shows the DD sunk. I-28 also fired at the DD Dale, but missed.

I made a classic error with this, forgot to put the retirement mode on! As it wasn't enough, one DD is out of fuel which eats some distance from our tommorrow's run. Zeros have been ordered to LRCAP.

The attack itself wasn't that bad, 12 Warhawks and 2 Catalinas got turned into scrap in the naval and aerial bombardments. No B17's thou as I had hoped.

Post by Shilka »

For the next turn, I have ordered an attack at Bandoeng with the support of a few additional regiments, cavalry unit, engineer unit and an artillery unit. Hopefully we can crush that nut once and for all.

An attack has been also ordered at the forest near Sian. I have 2280AV there, not sure what the Chinese have (22 units). A bad feeling about that it will be more. Still have arty units, a division and 2 additional HQ's moving there.

We will support Bandoeng with this regiment also, after that its a quick rush to Soerabaja and the rest of the eastern bases on the island.

Bataan has been swept of mines, and the transports are about to enter Manila harbour.

In "misc" news, our first oil convoy has been organized from Singapore. It consists of 9x 18-19kt tankers, 2 subchasers, 5 escort vessels and one Mutsuki-destroyer. The capacity is 111k tons. I quickly calculated by the Tracker, that Japan has a deficit of 241490k tons in a month, so we will see how this will work out. We probably need two of these convoys atleast.

Between Singapore and Palembang, our 3 dedicated Sally asw-squadrons have spotted three subs in the area. We have very heavy asw-surface assets roaming the area of the following:

1x  1PB, 3SC
1x  3DD
1x  2PB, 2SC TF

Today we lost an APD and an xAK to these pests, so every one we get rid of helps us very much in the long run.

In the Home Islands we have a following kind of ASW-cover. It has done a pretty good job in supressing as only two ships have been sunk in the Shikuka-Wakkanai route. In the Port Arthur - Home Islands route, we have been blessed with no sinkings.

February 25th

On the 25th, the I-8 managed to sink the KV New Westminster near San Francisco.

At North Australia, we were thrilled by our last turn devastation of Darwin, and guessed (without intelligence) that the Warhawks had withdrawn to Katherine. We sent Nells and Bettys to bomb the airfield. Unfortunately, our Zero sweeps arrived after the bombers, and 12 Nells and 2 Bettys (and good torpedo-bombing pilots) were downed.

At Merak, the Dutch bombers managed to do a sneak attack on one of our DMS's working in the Merak straight and sunk her with 50kg bombs out of Bandoeng. The Japanese minesweeper fleet hasn't appreciated this war so far, as 8 has now been sunk, leaving us with 12.

This turn we succesfully landed at Balikpapan without casualties, although the cruiser Maya hit a mine there. No serious damage (13FLT).

-------------------------------------------------

February 26th

This turn we got 12 supposed depth-charge hits on the SS KXII at Balikpapan, althou no sinking was reported. Balikpapan was also captured on the same turn.

On Java, the Dutch have dug in pretty good at Bandoeng, as they managed to cause bigger casualties for our 5 times bigger force. Thou worth noting is the bigger number of destroyed squads.

Ground combat at Bandoeng (50,100)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 51480 troops, 623 guns, 131 vehicles, Assault Value = 1654

Defending force 19270 troops, 325 guns, 98 vehicles, Assault Value = 308

February 27th

Today, the I-7 managed to sink an xAK off San Diego. I have been pretty depressed with the number of our sub sightings so far, despite the long sub picket line off the Californian coast. We have 14 subs off California, 9 surrounding Pearl Harbour and 8 covering the Indian coast and Colombo.

In other good news, our ASW efforts near Palembang have payed dividends. The SS KXVII was hit with somewhat 10 direct depth-charge hits by our DD-TF, after which she was forced to surface. She fired 4 torpedos on the Yudachi which all missed, then she became Swiss-cheese after a combined salvo and "slipped beneath the waves".

Above China, air skirmishes managed to down 6 H81-A3's today vs. 3 Oscar and 2 Lily losses.

Here are the biggest airlosses up to date in the campaign:

A couple of turns ago, I received a "heavy volume transmission" message from the Canadian port of Prince Rupert. I immediately started playing with the thought, that it might be the Allied CV's training there. Or then again, it could be a large convoy for Alaska. Whatever the case, I have sent a few Glen-subs two recon the area, as I hope to get some answers for this mystery message.

The CV's have been last sighted in early January,as they made a surprise attack near Kendari and sunk some destroyers and transports. After that they have remained silent.

Not much happened this turn. Near Palembang, our DD-TF found the SS 016 and got three hits on the sub, before Yudachi ran out of depth-charges and the other two couldn't spot her anymore. I think this might have cleared the tanker routes for a little while atleast, as no more subs are spotted in the area.

Allied subs fired on a DD and an DMS this turn, but missed or they were duds.

At Bandoeng, the siege goes on and we attacked today:

Now the cut-off possibility is lost, so we have to settle to just chasing the Chinese units. I would guess that the resistance stiffens to much before we get to Lanchow. We'll see.
