I thought I new a fair amount about this time frame. However, I am currently reading Three Victories and a Defeat - covering the rise and fall of the first British empire by Brendan Samms. This covers the period roughly 100 years before and up to the French Revolution. So much more of the map now makes sense to me. A great read to get your political juices flowing!
