Thinking of buying

The team behind the award-winning game Advanced Tactics is back with a new and improved game engine that focuses on the decisive early days of World War II! Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris is the first in an innovative series of operational World War II wargames that also include a strategic element. The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris simulates Germany’s military successes in Poland and France in 1939 and 1940 (including also a hypothetical “Sea Lion” invasion of Great Britain).

Thinking of buying

Post by gargoil »

I am thinking of purchasing this game. I have a few questions. PC wargames I've played are WitP:AE, HOI series, Battles in Normandy, Forge of Freedom, Birth of America, the Talonsoft battlegrounds stuff, and others.

What game would you compare this game to?
How are losses dealt with? Strength losses, step losses, eliminations, replacements.
Is combat realistic, very abstract?
What is the time scale of a turn?

How would you rate this game overall?

I would say its closer to Battles in Normandy from your list. A "modern" version of that type of game engine. If you like operational scale games, like Battles in Normandy, then you will love this. Combat information is way more detailed. You are woking with numbers of men instead of "steps" which I feel is too abstract. Knowing exactly how many men you have in a given regiment gives you a better idea of the forces you have and what you are up against. Overall, its the best operational level wargame to date - my opinion of course.

I bought Kharkov - disaster on the Donets last week, and althought I think its a good game, well I'm sticking with Warsaw to Paris... With that said, I hope to see an Eastern Front version in the near future. So, if you like operational level games then this is a must-buy!

it's neither comparable to BiN, nor to any of the above mentioned titles.

Allowedly, I didn't purchase this game yet, but the predecessor played like a light version of TOAW. To get a grasp about the system one could look for a demo version of people's tactics.

I have the game and it is nothing like Advanced Tactics except in a few small bits. And certainly nothing like People's Tactics. The comparison to BiN is not a bad one, however.

I too, am looking forward to an East Front expansion.

I purchased and downloaded this afternoon and I am on turn 3 of the Campaign (starting in Poland, of course).

I also play WiTP AE, BiN, TOAW or OPART from Talonsoft, etc. etc.  I owned AT but didn't enjoy it after a while.

This new game is a huge improvement over AT, which was rather ahistorical, and you won't get much of a sense of it by playing the AT demo.  I am enjoying it so far - lovely map and artwork, easy to learn controls, but you have to think before you click, good mix of operational and tactical decisions to be made.  To my mind, the closest comparison is either with BiN or TOAW, but I sense that this is superior to both.  It certainly has huge potential.

A East Front module would be welcomed, but given the expected release of WitE, it might make more sense for the devs to focus on the Western Front and/or North Africa...?

Balkans 1941 and Russia 41-42(up to Stalingrad) would be great. I would rather see Kharkov 1942 covered over Stalingrad though.

Africa and Norvegian Campaigns would be nice...
How would you rate this game overall?

I just finished a small scenario, I have to try it against an human opponent because the AI has been easily beaten.
Anyhow it looks very good so far.

The AI can be augmented via the opening menu to give it help or not. I played it standard and it gave me a run for my money. You can see the results of my game via the AAR posted at the Wargamer website.

I also agree that no AI can be as smart, or stupid as a human player. [:D]

Eh eh, I know it but I firmly convinced that you can find a good AI just in the chess games.

Did you seen an evident difference?

LOL! Be delighted to give you a go in a pbem but I uninstalled all my Beta game builds as I didnt think it was ethical to keep them. Matter of principal to me. I am not sure if I am entitled to a gold version since I never heard anything about this. But if it is the case and I get one I will be happy to give you a game.

Will do [:)] Matrix owes me a game anyway for my AAR on the Wargamer. IF I am barred from a gold of WTP for whatever reason I may use my freebie to get this because the PBEM aspect of this game is outstanding.

I plan on buying, but I am reading the forums to make sure it is what I think it is, and not AT, which I found a little too generic.

Never played AT so I have no basis to comment on that. It is a game that models Case White and Yellow with some additional scenarios, Operation Sealion etc.

Neat aspect is the campaigns are linked, and how well you do in respect to one campaign affects the other.
