Taking Warsaw ?

The team behind the award-winning game Advanced Tactics is back with a new and improved game engine that focuses on the decisive early days of World War II! Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris is the first in an innovative series of operational World War II wargames that also include a strategic element. The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris simulates Germany’s military successes in Poland and France in 1939 and 1940 (including also a hypothetical “Sea Lion” invasion of Great Britain).

Taking Warsaw ?

Post by Chocolino »

How do you manage to take Warsaw?

I also did not yet find a way to effectively cut-off the Polish units escaping west toward Warsaw though I usually catch a good number. But even more slip through and are then available to defend the capital.

I played the campaign now a few times and I find the Poland scenario by far the hardest. Usually I try to get all VPs but Warsaw. But if the British land an Expeditionary Force near Danzig (one of the variants), then taking Warsaw becomes sometimes necessary as the Brits are hard to defeat and the Germans not well set up to handle it.

I managed only once to take Warsaw and that with a lot of luck. I attached the Pzr Kempf to the "WOD" HQ and after moving them into the East of Warsaw I then found that the city hex itself was weakly defended while there were large stacks of Polish units in the neighboring hexes. Never happened again. (And that is good) But I am sure there must be a way to do this better.

Try for big encirclements--but never pass up an opportunity to take the "little bite". Surround and kill the "little bites" by forcing their retreat. Push in deep with your armor--always--and clean up any bypassed units using your infantry. Use every point of rail to concentrate your forces at the decisive points. Focus your airpower and artillery units at the decisive points. Move, surround, kill--and always press on--as deep as you can go--every time. Every Polish unit you kill at the beginning is one less unit defending Warsaw at the end. Every undefended hex you take is one less battle to fight.

i just played this once and was able to take Warsaw in the last turn. but i wasn't able to take the southern evak point nor the eastern vp cities.
army group south was advancing to warsaw very fast and took the capital after two rounds of heavy fighting. but army group north barely reached the outskirts of the city, except Pzr Kempf that got northeast of the city, blocking reinforcements.

in the end 65% of the polish troops were mia/kia and 7% of my troops were gone too.

good to hear this is the hardest one. will start the france scenario tonight.

Thanks to all for the good advice.

I may not be aggressive enough and are too afraid to go over the 10% loss limit.

I am having some difficulties myself. First time I played the senario I was no where near taking warsaw, but very close to taking to other VP's. I thought to replay it, but this time I got the varient where you have less troops. And now I am having difficulties getting enough troops to warsaw, to effectivly make an assault. Supply lines being a concern too.

Yes, big encirclements. Read up and know where the two cities are that they draw supply from and cut off large swaths from them.

I agree. My troops are advancing too fast. The pockets of Polish troops I surrounding are causing supply to be rerouted and my forward units are getting severe supply penalties.I like it,makes a challenging and realistic game.
