Well it has become official, one of my beloved MC-130 Combat Talons has crashed in Afgan, killing 3 with 7 survivors. My thoughts and prayers are with those how have suffered such a terrible fate. How does someone return to work knowing that they'll never see someones smiling face again. What I want to know, is if we can be so upset over 1 aircrew in Afganistan....

Why is it so hard for us to get people to remember the past.

Naturally I feel for the loss of the families (that goes without saying as they served their country well).

But we lost millions during WW1 and WW2 as well as all those that fell in Korea and Vietnam.

Society has mostly forgotten all those brave souls.

When I see all the fuss for a few lost personel, and the complete lack of interest in the millions of not so long dead of not so many years past...

I'm sorry but I can't join in. 3 men or 30 or 300 or 3000 those numbers, pale in comparison to the forgotten millions.

Each man serving in Afganistan is there for the same reasons they were there in WW1. But each man knew the risks a job in uniform requires.

The undo media devotion is perhaps disgusting in its lack of proper perspective to the past.

Well, I submit that given the renewal of interest in WW2 and Vietnam, partially inspired by the current war,that this argument is fast losing its validity.

As someone who also had bro's who didn't come back, while I'm still trading O2 for CO2, I'm of the strong view that this is entirely appropriate.

I feel pain and sorrow for all those that gave their lives and dedication in the past, but I wasn't around then so my personal feelings are focused on the present. As this hits home as I worked with these individuals day in and day out, both here in the US and abroad during all recent camapigns I've been involved with for the past 17 years. ........................................................

I'm amazed Les. Mourning for the recently dead doesn't mean we forget or minimize the sacrifices of those that went before. Just because the casulty rate is much lower than in previous conflicts doesn't diminish the loss of these brave individuals.

Just because they understood the risks doesn't make their loss any less traumatic to their family and friends like gmenfan.

Those 3 or 30 or 300 or 3000 are part of those millions... If you choose not to honor or respect one, you fail to honor or respect them all. I noticed that you overlooked the Civil War, 1812, the Revolutionary War, and many others.... Just because you didn't mention them at this moment doesn't mean you have forgotten them, I am sure.

So you see, we can honor gmenfan's friends, and it doesn't mean we have forgotten anything.

No every fallen soldier is equally valid.

Admittedly I didn't go further back than WW1, but that doesn't diminish anything previous in my mind.

No the people that annoy me are not you guys, its the people ranting in places like Maclean's Magazine (my countries equal to Time magazine).

They are the people that comment and often have no idea of what they comment on. They also don't show up on Rememberence Day or likely in your case Memorial Day.

These people that say the words and yet won't back them up. Which explains why my country is allowed to send our Army into harms way in a manner that borders on criminal negligence.

I am just sensitive I guess. One to many hysterical civilian, ranting in the press about a subject they know nothing about.

It dramatically alters the sentence if you misread it.
