AI Question

Post by CaptBeefheart »

Hello WPO'ers,

I picked up this game back in 2006, dabbled with it a bit and then forgot about it, and recently installed it on my latest desktop. I started up the 1926 campaign and noticed the Japanese invaded the three northeast Luzon bases, Mindanao and Wake. Wake fell and Mindanao is definitely about to fall, so no complaints there, but the guys in northern Luzon seem to only be taking ikebana lessons over a month into the game. Also, Manchuria, China and everywhere else are quiet, so my question is whether the AI is a worthy opponent in this game or whether it can truly only be experienced as a PBEM.

Also, please don't take this as a flame as I'm not at all unhappy with my purchase, love the era and would wholeheartedly support WPO-AE.

Cheers,
CC

Cmdr Cody,

The AI is lacking. Best to play PBEM.

Working on a new PBEM Scenario that was started by Hellfirejet.

Hopefully that will add some more players as this game is good, just needs some
more scenarios to add more flavor and options.

PAW: Thanks for the response. I may have to consider PBEM for the first time ever. Keep up the good work with your projects.

Cmdr Cody,

It is funny, after playing for 3 months, I finally realized I was playing myself. No Japanese followups in the Philippines, China quiet, ships just staying put and I was cleaning up.

Now, I am wondering if Production is on, whether the AI would react?

AI, unfortunately, is not up to par. I've heard of games where it was formidable - but have not experienced one myself. A live opponent would be more of a challenge.

Rysyonok: The AI in WITP-AE is pretty challenging in some of the scenarios, especially Ironman, much more so than this. Still, no doubt PBEM is the best way to do it.

I always thought the Civ and GalCiv series had pretty decent AI--enough to get quite a few playings in before getting bored.

For what its worth, I stubbornly played the AI in a 1922 campaign that lasted the equivillent of almost 3 game years. The AI did give a few surprises, and definately taught me the game mechanics. But when I finally did try PBEM, like you for the first time ever, the difference was huge. It most certainly kept my interest in the game alive. Just read some of the AARs, both current and old, and compare them to the AI, to see what I mean.
