The Aichi H9a1 was a parasol winged seaplane which was mostly used as a seaplane trainer for the
JNAF but toward the later war years was used for ASW missions
The prototype first flew in 1940 and was officially known as the Type 2 Model 11 training flying boat.The plane had a normal crew of 5 men but could also carry 3 students.
It was powered by 2 710 HP Nakajima Kotobuki 3 radial engines which hung under the wings.
During 1942-43 the Eitoku factory turned out 27 H9a1's and another 4 were built in 1943 by Nippon Hikkoki.
In the ASW role the plane carried 2 550 Lbs bombs or depth charges on racks beneath the wings.
The plane was armed with a 7.7 mm MG in the nose and another on the upper rear of the fuselage.
