"Un-named" Japanese plane

Post by m10bob »

Not all Japanese planes got named by the Allies, either because they were not known of, or the Allies did not see them much during the war, or identified them as some other plane.

The Aichi H9a1 was a parasol winged seaplane which was mostly used as a seaplane trainer for the
JNAF but toward the later war years was used for ASW missions

The prototype first flew in 1940 and was officially known as the Type 2 Model 11 training flying boat. The plane had a normal crew of 5 men but could also carry 3 students.
It was powered by 2 710 HP Nakajima Kotobuki 3 radial engines which hung under the wings.

During 1942-43 the Eitoku factory turned out 27 H9a1's and another 4 were built in 1943 by Nippon Hikkoki.

In the ASW role the plane carried 2 550 Lbs bombs or depth charges on racks beneath the wings.
The plane was armed with a 7.7 mm MG in the nose and another on the upper rear of the fuselage.
Span: 78ft 8 1/2 in
Length:55FT 7 1/2 in
Weight:16689
Max speed:202 MPH@9810 Ft
Ceiling:22,250 Ft
Combat range:approx 1300 Mi.
