Red Sun Rising. Divepac (J) vs. Fallschirmjager (A) - no peeking FJ.
This is an AAR covering the titanic struggle between myself directing Japan, and the illustrious Fallschirmjager directing the Allies. It is my first attempt at PBEM as a Japanese Player, I have always played as the Allies in my PBEM games. I have played to early 1944 as Japan against the AI, and have really become engrossed in the industrial side of the game. I have also studied the masters such as 'Mike Solli, 'Q-ball', and 'Fletcher', and use their spreadsheets and writings to aid me in running my economy.
We are playing campaign 2 with all these extra airgroups and factories, and it was Fallschirmjager's idea (can you believe that), as I was just going to go with campaign 1. I couldn't believed it when I started working on the first turn, and came across all these extra airgroups, especially the those beautiful naval ones. I had never even looked at campaign 2 to be honest, until I started working on this turn. I can tell you I can't wait to get tracker fired up after I run the first turn, and see what other goodies are under the hood.
As for the house rules we really don't have any, apart from paying PP's to move restricted units out of area/country. We did have the normal rules regarding what the Allied player can move on the first turn. So there is no restriction on my port attacks on the first turn, but I will only be attacking the port at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7. As I believe that the Allied airpower has to be dealt with first in both on Luzon, and in Malaya. I fell that most, if not all other rules aim to restrict good tactics and operational doctrine, and real war doesn't have house-rules.
My grand strategy is pretty strait forward really, and that is to win of course. But seriously I would state now that I think that fuel is Japans number one consideration. That all operations should be toward this guiding principle, or toward the protection of this resource. The only other main strategic consideration, would be the destruction of the USN carrier force. But this doesn't mean running operation with the express purpose of drawing-out the USN carrier force. This means that if KB is covering an operation it is on an anti-ship mission only, and any other air-support required for this operation will be supplied by LBA, or an additional carrier force.
Phase 1 Operations;
In China the only phase 1 operation will develop toward Sian, with the goal off taking the oil wells and refinery's of this area. All regular Japanese army units that can be freed up will be allocated to this task. Also 6x months will be allocated for the operation, and if Sian is not taken by that time, the units will be rested then try again.
The Allied forces on Luzon (14th Army) will be pressed back on Bataan or Manila, and reduced by artillery and air bombardment. Only 2x divisions, and a brigade (16, 48 divs, and 65 Bde) plus engineer, artillery, tank support will be committed here. So it will be more of a holding operation till the enemy is worn down enough to assault. I will allocate 6x months to this operation. Also all landings on Luzon will be above Clark Field, as I don't believe in dividing my force against a concentrated enemy.
Singapore (25th Army) is the priority objective for me, and I want to take it within 3x months. To make this possible I am deploying 6x divisions here (IG, 5, 18, 21, 4, 38 divs (after HK)), plus numerous engineer, artillery, tank, and other supporting units. I consider Singapore as the key to the SRA, take this base early, then Sumatra and Java are doomed.
Burma (15th Army) gets 2x full divisions (55, 33 divs) at the start, as I am bring the 144th regiment back from the Pacific (replaced there by the 90th regiment from Korea). Added to this are a tank, medium artillery, and mountain gun regiments. The phase 1 tasking for this Army is the capture of Rangoon, and advancing to the line of Prome and Toungoo. I have allocated 3 months for the 15th Army to achieve these objectives.
The Strategic reserve for both the 25th and 15th Armies is the 21st independent-mixed brigade based in Bangkok. When the 38th division is released to the 25th Army from Hong Kong, the 21st brigade will move as a local reserve for the 15th Army to Rangoon.
Northern Borneo and Southern Sumatra (16th Army, Northern Region) is assigned 1x division (2 div), along with 4x IJN SNLF battalions, and 1x mountain gun regiment. Phase 1 objectives for this command are the capture of all enemy bases on the northern coast of Borneo. Then the capture of Palembang, Djambi, and Praboemoelib in Southern Sumatra. 3x months have been allocated to this task, mainly because of the need to bring base units from the Home Islands.
Mindanao, Southeast Borneo, Celebes, Moluccas, Ceram, and Timor (16th Army, Southern Region) is assigned 1x division (56 div), along with 1x tank regiment, 1x independent engineer regiment, 4x IJN SNLF battalions, 3x IJN naval guard battalions, and 1x medium artillery regiment. Phase 1 objectives are as follows, the capture and clearing of Mindanao, and the capture of Manado and Ternate. Along with the capture of Tawau, Tarakan, Tandjoengselor, Ambon, Kendari, Samarinda, Balikpapan, Makassar, then finally Lautem, Dili, and Koepang on Timor. 4x months have been allocated to these tasks, and some reinforcement will be needed here.
Just to note that 1x IJN SNLF battalion is now loading at Babeldaob, and with assault Guam when ready.
Operations in the New Guinea, Admiralties, Bismarck's, New Britain, and Solomon Islands areas are the responsibility of the Southeast Fleet. For operations in this area 2x infantry regiments (90, 124 Rgts), 4x IJN naval guards battalions, and 2x IJN SNLF companies have been allocated. Phase 1 operations in this area are the occupation of bases on the east coast of New Guinea, and the approaches to Rabaul on New Britain. When these bases have been secured, then Rabaul will be taken, and built-up into major base. Port Moresby, Shortland Islands in the Solomons, and other bases in south west Papua will then be occupied. Then finally to finish up Phase 1 in this area bases will be secured in the mid, and lower Solomon Islands. 3x months have been allocated to all Phase 1 operations in this area.
Operations and defense of the South Eastern, and Eastern Pacific areas are the responsibility of the 4th Fleet. There are only 4x Phase 1 operations planned for the 4th Fleet Area. They are the sizing of the US base on Wake, the occupation of Tarawa, and the occupation of both Nauru and Ocean Islands. For these operations 2x IJN SNLF Battalions, and 4x IJN naval guard battalions have been allocated. 2x months have been allotted for the completion of these tasks.
In the Northern Pacific and Kurile Island region which are the responsibility of 5th Fleet, no offensive operations are planned at this time. It is my intention to building up defensive bases in the Kurile Islands only. Also bomber capable airfields will be built on both Paramushiro-jima and Onnekotan-jima, to suppress the Western Aleutians in case FJ builds any forward bases there.

Yes it would be a let-down the other way around I can tell you now. I always thought that I was a purest, and would only play historically setup scenarios. But having seen the setup now for campaign 2, I have probably been been seduced by the dark-side. [:D]

Hi Divepac, as a 'purist' myself I am wondering if there aren't some catches to scenario #2 as well. I have read somewhere the increased pilot training (in quantity) eats up HI so you need a lot of resources/fuel/oil/supllies to keep things going. On the other hand, I take it there are more betty/nell groups? Now that is very interesting

Hi d0mbo, yes it will have an extra resource and fuel cost. But I am setting my resource/oil convoys up from the get-go. Also I am aware that it is fuel and resources that I need to move back to the Home Islands as soon as possible from the liberated territories.

Thank you sir, spelling is not my strong point, after working on AE-turns all night. [X(]

The smartest person I've ever known couldn't spell a lick, so you're in good company!
Good luck with your game.

I'm definitely not the worlds greatest smart person. But when I start talking about strategy and tactics, the little things like spelling seem to go out the window.
And thank you for the luck Canoerebel, I appreciate it, and need it I suspect.

Underwhelming Pearl Harbor Strike.
7th of December 1941,
Hostilities commence with my 1st Carrier Strike Force attacking Pearl Harbor. First off because of a fubar by me, only half my Kate groups strike at PH. The other Kate groups hit the port at Lahaina, because I forgot to set a target, idiot. But apart from the human error, I find the results of the strike underwhelming. Now I don't need to sink his battleships, but I need to put them in the yard for a longtime. That I haven't done, and I also haven't destroyed near enough of his fighters. So no way round it, I will have to attack a fully alerted PH again tomorrow.

But I am happy with my land-based air strikes on the Philippines and Malaya, and the way the bombers and fighters all coordinated together. I only lost 2x Sally's to FJ's fighters all day, and that was over Georgetown, when some Buffalo I's got past my Oscar Ia's.
So tomorrow in the Philippines I will rest my IJNAF bombers, and the A6M2's from Formosa will all sweep Manila to knock down as many fighters as possible. While the IJAAF bombers and fighters will hit Iba airfield again to suppress the fighters based there.
In Malaya the A6M2's from Thailand will sweep Singapore to suppress as many of his fighters as possible. While the IJAAF will hit his Airfields at Alor Star, Georgetown, and Kuantan again. With my IJAAF Lilly's from Kompong Trach attacking British troop positions at Kota Bharu, in support of the my assault there tomorrow.
Which brings me to my landings at Kota Bharu today, which went without a hitch. Apart from some RAF raids on the shipping there, which luckily achieved no hits. Also no sign of Force Z at any of the landings in Malaya, so I will assume that FJ has pulled that force south.
A IJN SNLF battalion occupied Batan Island in the Formosa Strait today, and a JAAF airfield battalion is now unloading and setting-up. I have transfered a JAAF fighter regiment equipped with Ki-27b Nates there, and they will supply CAP's to the upcoming troop landings in Northern Luzon.
The landings on Luzon have been delayed for a day while I load 2x extra regiments of infantry in the Pescadores, and an extra brigade at Takao. This will allow me to land a large infantry blocking force at San Fernando a day after the Aparri/Vigan landings. It also gives me time to move a battleship covering force to Luzon, from the Home Islands.

Second Day of Strikes on Pearl Harbor.
8th of December 1941,
The results of the second day of air-raids on Pearl Harbor by the 1st Carrier Strike Force are very good I think. While they were costly in terms of the airframes and crews lost, the losses are exceptable for the results achieved. I would have been happy with all 8x USN Battleships badly damaged, and that 2x capital ships were actually sunk is icing on the cake. My Carrier force will now retire northwest from Pearl Harbor, and pick up the refueling group before heading west. It's next operation is to cover the Wake landings in 7x days time, and after that it will return to the Home Islands.

Tarawa Atoll falls to the Empire today.
9th of December 1941,
The strategic Atoll of Tarawa was occupied unopposed today by the 53rd naval guard battalion. This atoll will now be developed as a patrol seaplane and forward fighter base, plus also as a forward submarine refueling outpost.
The Raiders Aikoku Maru and Hokoku Maru operating together in the South Pacific west of Bora Bora, located and attacked a small Allied convoy overnight. The enemy convoy consisting of 3x small French freighters are all believed to have been sunk. The Raiders will now separate and head north looking for more prey.
7x American B-17 Fortress heavy-bombers attacked shipping at Babeldaob today, after easily brushing-aside the defending A5M4 Claude fighters. But luckily all the B-17s bombing-runs missed their targets, and if he comes again tomorrow he will find A6M2 Zeros.
A JAAF airfield-suppression mission over Iba suffered heavy losses today, when the raid encountered stronger that expected fighter opposition. I lost 8x Ki-48-Ib Lilies, and 3x Ki-43-Ic Oscars over Iba or on the return flight, for only 1x P-40E enemy fighter downed. I suspect that the US fighters are flying from Clark Field again, which will receive some attention tomorrow.
Morning Air attack on Iba , at 78,75
Weather in hex: Heavy cloud
Raid spotted at 26 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.

My raids mainly cancelled again in Malaya because of the weather, with only 1x bomber raid against troops at Alor Star taking off. But the RAF managed to get some medium-bomber pass my Nates at Kota Bharu, and attack my heavy warships there. But luckily all their bombs fell wide off their mark, and 2x enemy aircraft were shot down by my warships.
I-156 managed to torpedo and sink a small Allied cargo vessel southwest off Singkawang overnight.
Also I-123 and I-124 have left some little surprises off Cagayan overnight, so lits hope they curse some damage.

Landings on Luzon Begin Today.
10th of December 1941,
Operations on Luzon commenced today with landings at both Aparri and Vigan in the north of the Island. Both bases will easily be occupied tomorrow as there are no enemy units present. Then Infantry units from both beachheads will push south, as fast as possible. Air reconnaissance shows that all his units in the north are falling-back on Clark Field. The next landing is scheduled in 3x days time when the 16th, and most of the 48th divisions land at Lingayen.
Some air-action over Clark Field today with a Zero fighter sweep from Formosa, 6x US fighters were down for the loss of 2x Zeros. Tomorrow will see heavy IJAAF and IJNAF bombing raids on both Clark Field's and Manila's airfields.
Air losses to date-
A USN S-boat torpedoed and sunk a SC off Aparri landing during the night, then other escorts damaged the the submarine in a counterattack.
While a USN submarine hit a mine off Cam Ranh Bay overnight, and is believed to have sunk.
Also IJN escort forces off the landings at Kota Bharu are almost curtain to have sunk a Dutch submarine during the day.

Airframe Stats to Date.
Airframe stats for you Guys to pull apart-

Notes;
I am building Ki-43-Ib Oscars because in scenario 2 you start with 2x groups, and I am converting another Ki-27b group to them also. So I want spare aircraft to replace the losses, and I also want as many groups in Oscars ASAP to save on Pilots.
I am building E7K2 Alf's because I want a second string float-plane with range, for training and for backward areas.

Allied Airpower on Luzon Hammered Today.
11th of December 1941,
Both Aparri and Vigan on Luzon were occupied by my forces to day, and the infantry will now push south. Air reconnaissance confirmed again today; that all his units in the northern part of Luzon are heading south. The Lingayen landing force, along with it's covering force sail from Formosa tonight, so the major landings on Luzon will start day after tomorrow.
I launched heavy IJAAF and IJNAF air-raids on both Clark Field and Manila, as I work toward braking the back of US airpower over Luzon. There were some large fighter dogfights over both airfields as FJ attempts to defend them. But given 2x more good flying days over Luzon, his airpower should be history.
Day airframe losses-

The RAF launched 2x medium bomber raids against my shipping off Kota Bharu today, but both strikes were driven off by my intrepid Ki-27 Nates.
Also a group of Ki-43-Ib Oscars swept Rangoon today as a prelude to my air operations over the city. The Oscars managed to down 2x RAF Buffalo fighters for no loss of their own. If the weather hold I will raid the airfield with IJAAF medium-bombers tomorrow.
IJAAF Light-bombers struck at troop positions in Hong Kong for the second day today, and will do so again tomorrow. Hong Kong was also subject to a second of a artillery bombardment, which will continue for another 3x days. Then after this 'softening-up' the infantry outside the city will put in a deliberate attack. I expect it will take between 4-6 days of assaults before the city falls.
IJN naval guard units landed at both Aitape and Hollandia on the east coast of New Guinea today, and will finish occupying these bases tomorrow. This is part of the Southeast Fleet operations to secure the approaches to Rabaul, and Manus and Kavieng will be next.

A good day at war, no big fubar's.
12th of December 1941,
The Luzon air campaign continued again today with large IJAAF/IJNAF air-raids on the airfields at both Clark Field and Manila. FJ is still putting up fighter opposition over both bases, but the number of US fighters is dwindling. My Formosa air groups will have a rest day tomorrow, so as to be fresh for the Lingayen landings, which start the day after tomorrow (was a day out on my timing yesterday).

Got a good IJAAF bombing-run on Rangoon today, and will see if AVG shows up here tomorrow.

Time for all group planes to reach interception is 32 minutes
In Malaya the IJAAF bombed troop position around Alor Star, in support of the mobile units (1x Tank, 1x Recon Rgt's) that will attack here tomorrow. The IJAAF also worked-over the airfield at Georgetown, as I am trying to stop FJ shuttling any airframes north.
Also today in Southern Burma a battalion of the 143rd regiment captured the British base at Victoria Point.

A Quiet Day, For A World War Really.
13th of December 1941,
Pretty quiet day really, with just some minor landings and skirmishing. It was Allied torpedo boats that caused the most mayhem today off San Fernando. When the torpedo boats attack caused 2x of my AK’s to collided, when their convoy decided to stop unloading and run for Formosa.
A SC patrol off Naha hunted for a USN submarine that they had sighted, but the sub was able to escape. Another USN submarine tried to attack a convoy off Saigon, but was driven off by the escort.
A SNLF battalion started to land on Guam today, and will secure the Island tomorrow.
My mobile units attacked the British force withdrawing from Alor Star today, but were unable to defeat them.
Ground combat at Alor Star (49,73)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 1865 troops, 2 guns, 172 vehicles, Assault Value = 113
Defending force 5120 troops, 54 guns, 34 vehicles, Assault Value = 216

Landings in the Lingayen Gulf Started Today.
14th of December 1941,
Greetings people...
The main news today is the landings in the Lingayen Gulf on Luzon today, by the 16th and most of the 48th divisions. The landings were opposed my FJ's coastal defences batteries, which managed to sink to medium Maru's. Despite this setback none of my units are damaged with all showing some disruption, but only a few disablements. All the combat units will put in a deliberate attack tomorrow, and with only 1x PA division present will easily take the base.
While also on Luzon the 65th brigade took San Fernando, and the 2nd Formosa regiment liberated Tuguegarao. Both units will head south as fast as they can, and rest when they get to Clark Field. IJAAF Sallies supported by IJNAF Zero's hammered Clark Field again today, as I want this AF permanently suppressed, and no more forts built.

The Operations are Progressing Well in Most Areas.
15th of December 1941,
Guam has fallen to the Kure SNLF battalion that landed there.
I put in the first deliberate attack on Hong Kong today, and while my troops reduced the fort level, the losses were a bit too heavy for my liking-

On Luzon, Lingayen fell to the my landing forces there. These units will now push on for Clark Field, and I will see if I can put in an attack there, before he concentrates most of his units there. Also the IJAAF worked over the airfields at Clark Field again. I am now bringing across from Formosa to San Fernando a large force of airfield personnel. So will have a large IJAAF bomber/fighter force operating from there soon.
In Malaya, south of Alor Star the British force of 2x infantry brigades, plus an artillery regiment appear to be moving toward Georgetown. I have a infantry regiment in the same hex as these units, but will not attack as long as they keep heading for Georgetown.
