#11 at 2 months time

Post by RayM »

I've just spent the entire night on #11 and have run exactly 2 months worth (I went back and restarted once or twice). On the positive side, I have held on to PM, established an airfield on San Cristobal, invaded Guadalcanal (on 4 Aug 42), and have held on so far. I had to send both the Sara and Wasp back to Pearl for repairs and to top things off, the enemy was able to complete the airfield on Guadalcanal just two turns before I invaded. Bummer.

Please forgive me if my frustration is showing at the moment but I need to vent, and the lack of sleep doesn't help either. So here goes.

Weather. In the current game, I have spent approximately two weeks in Overcast resulting in far too many (IMHO) missed opportunties to attack IJN TFs coming into and out of PM. On at least 4 occasions since the start, Bombardment and CV TFs came right in and struck PM without any air response due to missions being cancelled (and yes, a good number have been cancelled on the other side as well). And it is not only at longer search ranges, but it also occurs when the TFs are physically in the same 30 mile hex as the airfield. I would expect something to happen other than having my aircraft and airfields plowed up. I have figured out how to keep my air units fresh and supplied but time after time air missions are cancelled.

While I'm sure I will feel better about it after I get some sleep and get a grip on it, I cannot help but think that the constant disappointment in this area is changing my very positive opinion to one of real irritation with the game itself. I admit to having a real bad thought at one point during these events about dumping UV and going back to PACWAR but I won't.

I certainly accept the fact that weather had an important impact on operations in the South Pacific but come on.

It's very possible that all of this is just part of my learning curve and my disappointment with how #11 is playing out at the moment. And it is still early in the game. In spite of these events, there have been several very rewarding moments and positive dramatic and suspenseful combat results so I'll keep after it.

Also during the night, I couldn't help wishing for the old PACWAR full human control, human operational control, or full computer control capability ala PACWAR in order to turn over the SWPA over to Gen. MacA and work the Solomons myself. Perhaps this is something WitP may use?

I have also come to agree with the person who wrote/said, that this really is a "click-fest." So true.

Well, I feel much better now. Looking forward to seeing what happens next when I start up again tonight. Off to breakfast!

Real frustration is when your game arrival date is set back one week due to being out of stock in the Southern hemisphere, which means if it arrives 100% on-time . . . it still arrives after my holidays are over! GRrrrrr!
