Naval pusuit and evasion

Post by Dancing Bear »

Hi all
I have only recently figured out how to make naval pursuit work (in the naval combat screen double click on the fleets, and a white arrow will appear on the top left corner of the fleet(s) that will pursue if victorious). (Warning: pursuit orders are not cleared at the end of the battle, so you need to re-set them everytime to avoid unexpected results).

Marshall, how hard would it be that after a fleet has evaded, instead of the game automatically closing the battle, it returned to the battle screen, given the non-evading stack the opportuniuty to pursue?

Hacing the game return to the battle screen after a fleet has evaded, so the controller of the attacking fleet has a chance to set pursuit orders might be an easy way to add pursuit to the evasion code.

Marshall:

Got selected to go to the College of Naval Warfare (aka Naval War College) in Newport RI next year. Plan on doing my thesis on the optimal redesign of EIA naval rules...[:)] let me know when you want the input!

If you are serious, I read a good book titled "a brief history of fighting ships", which had a great overview for a novice of Napoleonic naval battles like me. I learned a bunch of stuff, like a Ship of the Line was not allowed to fire on a frigate, unless the frigate fired of the ship of the line first, and frigates only role in the major naval battles of the period were as scouts, for which they were invaluable.

Well, I am serious about the school. But not about the thesis. Other more pressing naval engagements to consider just now. I would just ask Marshall to consider that the Naval Rules of the original game were most underwhelming and that I am, once again, offering to help revise them.

Dancing Bear I read your post here and I remember my uncle ( hellfirejet ) said the same thing well over a year ago,and I see that even after his untimely death, nothing has really changed regarding the naval rules for this game,as I remember my uncle used to pull his hair out with frustration at the thought of how out of touch the game was in respect of naval affairs.[;)]

Lets put this idea of lights v heavies to bed it is a bad option,as per this example from history.

FRIGATE V SHIP OF THE LINE.
A frigate captain who avoided battle with a ship of the line would certainly not be accused of cowardice,as the force of the larger ship was totally overwhelming . In fleet actions ships-of-the-line did not normally fire on frigates, unless the latter fired first. For example,at the battle of the Nile the 74 gun Goliath was manoevering into postion alongside the french line when the frigate Serieuse opened fire on her ; the Goliath fired back ,and with a single broadside dismasted her, shattered her hull, and caused her to drift away and sink.Even several frigates were not normally expected to take on a ship of the line.

So please stop saying that it is ok for a frigate to take on a heavy, because in planet real it is not. They are not designed to combat heavies and the rules need to take this into account. On land you would not expect an Infantry soldier armed with a riffle,to take on an artillery cannon because that is the same comparison.

Hey guys:

(kirk23, respects to your uncle who was the naval champion, no doubt!)

I'm not opposed to looking at better naval rules options BUT I have a bit more to acomplish before! I would like to even get to an IP play mode before I touch the naval stuff.

Thanks for the input!
Thank you

Thanks Kirk. Your uncle was a proper gentleman and is dearly missed. I loved our discussions! He saw the naval light, to be sure.
