Carriers as transports

Post by Sid »

I am unable to figure out how to use CVE Long Island to transport aircraft? Or vehicles and troops for that matter. ANY carrier is an outstanding platform to deliver land type planes, and oversize planes, to a port. And it also can deliver units, esp. motorized ones, very well. But this does not seem possible in this game system.

Transfer planes to the Long Island just as you would to any other carrier ("Transfer to Ship" on the squadron screen). Non-carrier squadrons will only be able to transfer off, others can fly missions as well. It makes a good plane ferry or a floating transfer point.

transfer to ship

Post by Sid »

Transfer to ship does NOT produce Long Island as an option for a non carrier aircraft.

In fact - bug - it does not even appear for carrier aircraft ON another carrier - ONLY for carrier aircraft at a land base.

Why just Long Island? Why not be able to transfer and transport planes on ANY carrier?

And why not be able to load land units? This is a fairly common thing. HMAS Australia ended its career as a transport, for years. The first US carrier did that during WWII, sunk in that role.

The Long Island...

Post by Erik Rutins »

Sid,

I've transferred P-39s to and from the Long Island myself. I'll give it another try and see if something changed with that under 1.11. Are you sure you have the Long Island in a TF within transfer range of the squadron?

Why Long Island? Because it was the main ship used in this role in this theater during this timeframe. War in the Pacific will allow for more flexibility.

We do know that transports carried aircraft, it's on the feature request list and may make it into a future version of UV, but we have a lot of requests to look through. :)

you missed my meaning

Post by Sid »

Well, it would be WONDERFUL if transports could carry aircraft, BUT that was NOT my meaning!

I mean CARRIERS can be TRANSPORTS! Esp. for aircraft.
But also for troops. Esp. motorized troops.

Interesting - Do you have any exemple of US or Japanese CV used as a troop transport during the UV timeframe (and in the South Pacific Theater - not between US --> Noumea/PH or Japan --> Truk) ?

French Carrier Transport

Post by Recon_slith »

The French Carrier Bearn was in for repairs at Pearl Harbour and seized by the USA. It was subsequently used exclusively as a transport.

I don't know where it served, unfortunately.

The Bearn was too slow for an aircraft carrier (20 knots max) and so was only used as an aircraft transport during the war by the French and then by the US.

So the Bearn was a kind of French Long Island :)
