What is the game speed?

I have not set a game speed yet. Is there a default and is there an optimum that most play at?

Upon start up, game is set for speed "1." You can hit buttons to go x2 x3 x4.
Best speed depends on what you are doing, how well you can follow whats going on, and, of course, size of Galaxy,and how much is on auto, and how much you have set the game to leave to your control.

Short answer = play with it until you discover what speed works best for you to enjoy the experience.

0.25x   0.5x  1x 2x  and 4x are the speed options.
You can press the + or - keys to adjust speed quickly in game.
If there's a bunch of crap happening I bring it right so I can see what's happening, when I'm waiting for a fleet to cross the galaxy and there's not much else happening I bump it up to 2x or 4x.

same here, my usual speed is 2x with some momments of pause speed[:)]

I am having good fun with about x2, although there are moments when I get 5 colonization messages, 3 ruins and a pirate (sounds like a xmas song), when I need to pause and scroll up to see what I missed.
