1st try vs soviet computer normal

Post by kevini1000 »

I'm going to try to start this weekend. I've been reading up on what other people have been doing and I want to go over certain sections of the rules even more closely. I'm fairly clear on most stuff but want to review supply, HQ's/Leaders and AIR aspects. I certainly hope to get started so stay tuned. :)

Oh I might need to ask for some tips on how to post screenshots if I can't figure it out :(.

Well firstly good luck; its great fun.

I have started or restarted the Road to leningrad about 5 timesas the AXIS vs the AI so for what its worth...

1. Recon airfields and all units you are going to attack. remember you can recon any time in your move ie move your unit in touch of enemy, recon to bring the det up to eg 10 then attack.

2. 1st turn bomb each airfield twice; and after that dont bother unless you find an airfield crammed with aircraft, or one of your units is going to bump into it (I sometimes get some reasonable kills from the bump by bombing first, and sometimes I get zero).

3. Try not to bump into routed units as they may Rout further east, which is the last thing you want

4. Do try to create pockets; this can be done very successfully ( I had 7 soviet units surrender during their 2nd turn)

5. Use an infantry div to break through and fight as many of the enemy as possible; on the first turn this may open up a 3 hex hole; then use the other untis in the Corp to run through the gap.

6. Use your armour and mot to penetrate as deeply as they can, preferably in a paththat creates pockets.

7. Preferable not to leave your HQs in a hex by themselves, even one hex behind the start line in turn 1

8. Dont move your units stacked, move them one by one, they seem to go further

9. Dont move the Finns right up to the Finn no fight line; leave a couple of hexes gap; whilst the Soviets retreat behind this line, the AI occassionally sends 1 unit past this line which you can then surround.

10. and for the armour and mot divs I noticed that the flak ground element had a FAT of eg 98 whereas all the other elements where like 50; attach flak as support units?

11. Bombing units seems to have no effect

Cheers

It creates screenshots to a folder which you can then upload and embed with your message. Make sure you set the picture propeties to jpg and the quality around 70%.

ok I think I got it now.

For the 1st suprise airfield attacks I did my best to work on the bomber type bases outside the range of single engine fighter cover as well as all the closer ones. I also transfered the XXIII corps to the 16th Army of AGN. I all ready noticed that AGC and AGS are way overloaded at the start. I still have 3 admin points left so I'll move an infantry division from one of the 9th army corps to the 18th army at some point.

I'm still working through the first turn lol. The 9th, 16 and 19th armies opened the holes for the panzer corps. Now where to send them exactly. I was succesful on one admin roll and was able to assign 2 division from the 9th army to 18th army. This uses up all my first turn admin points however after thinking about it, I could have motorized one of the infantry division assigned to the panzer corps. I can't go back now just for this one mistake as it would take way too much time. It would be nice to have 1 of those imfantry division further along with the panzers. I'll just have to try this on the 2nd go around.

I sweep them up towards Pskov and start building a really nice pocket up north. Armor there, the motorized move towards Riga to complete the circle.

Ok this first turn took forever. For AGN I wanted to get across the Daugava river with everything the 1st Panzers could put across. The Pocket is not complete because of ports but I wanted the SS Mot Division in line to help later where it is.

The southern wing of AGC. The Pocket is fairly small. I wanted 2nd Panzer as far forward as possible. I also wanted all the infantry as far forward as possible as well.

AGS was the most difficult part to do. Once again the Pocket is fairly small as I wanted infantry in certain places and I wanted a hole for my panzers. The move to Rovno is kind of Risky I think. I sent one Panzer division South to the Rumanian Border to activate them. I'm certain this pocket will not hold but I certainly want the units in the South on the move one turn early. I use air resupply for the Panzers in the South bringing up there fuel levels especially. I notice that ammo levels don't seem to increase with air resupply.

The 1st turn losses seem rather high so far. It also seems that killed/disabled ratio is wacky. Wouldn't you have more wounded and less killed in combat.

Hey that's odd, I check that screen every turn, can't remember ever having seen that. 10 to 1 ... should be more like the other way around?

Well that is certainly a unique approach sending 3rd Panzer north.

That AGS pocket is definitely toast against either human or AI. I now wait until the second turn to do that one.
