Use of artillery

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Use of artillery

Post by Jakerson »

There are generally 3 ways of using artillery.

1. Harasment fire this is fireing few shells at long period of time this is used to contain and control enemy movements. It can be used to delay enemy movement or help some front troops pull back and block enemy to follow.

2. Supressive fire. This is used to suppress most dangerous enemy units this is best used when combat is most intense to against most dangerous enemy elements and suppress them with artillery fire. This forces them to take cover instead of fireing your troops. This is most usefull in the offensive.

3. Destructive fire. This use maximum amount of shells and drain artillery ammo supply really fast so it is best to use destructive fire only against most valuable targets like enemy offensive concentrations, supply dumps or artillery positions. It is propably waste of ammo use this against entranced enemies generally it is more advantageous to suppress entranced enemies longer period of time than do one big artillery party on them and then run out of ammo.

Some comments on #3:

* Not only can you burn through your arty stocks fast, but fatigue rises rapidly. Potentially leaving them too exhausted to service fire missions when you need them or displace when they must.

* HQs if you get a good ID on them make excellent targets. Although not representing much fire power, remember that if they are routing or retreating, then they cannot generate a replan. Effectively, their subordinate units become paralyzed waiting for someone to tell them what to do.
