base troop capacity question

Post by jcjordan »

Is there some way to tell what the troop capacity of a base I'm going to invade is? I know things like atolls are 6000 & islands are 30k etc but how do I tell, when I'm in the game, what a base capacity is so I know if I'll face supply issues due to overstacking?

I'd be a nice feature to have on the mouseover popup info tab.

There are several ways. First, use Tracker. You really should be using Tracker anyway because of all the valuable information it can give you, organized in useful ways. Second, Look at this thread:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2725146

Using the KMZ file provided there, you can just go to the base on Google earth and click on it.

There are other ways too, such as using the scenario editor to look at how the bases are defined. There is currently no in-game way of seeing it, though.

There is a list in the appendix of the manual as well.

I knew about & use Tracker but was wondering if there was any thing in game w/o having to minimize game then go into another program to see. I guess from replies there's not other than knowing something like base x will hold x amt for all bases in the game

No, according to the replies there are at least 4 ways to look up the information when you need it.

I also made some maps based on screen shots a while back. Didn't do all the bases, but I did a great number of them. Do you want those?

Frankly, the only use I really see for tracker is to let you know when a ground unit has arrived at its destination.

I believe that the way the name of the island is printed tells you what the troop level is.  Not much help for the dot bases, but if you're going for a named island, then that's one way.

The naming distinction is between Atolls and larger islands. While this is a general guide, atolls come in at least three sizes and capacities. A quick perusal of the list in the manual shows atolls of "very small" (6,00 capacity), "small" (30,000 capacity) and "medium" (60,000 capacity). I did not see any atolls larger than medium, but may have missed them if they are there.

The printed list in the manual is the BEST resource for this info. One doesn't need to minimize the game for anything. Simply pick up the book and open it. Presupposing, of course, that one has a printed copy of the manual. [;)]

Christmas Island is an atoll of very large (no stacking limit) size.

The manual is missing at least one base, although I've long forgotten which one I verified is missing. I play in Windowed mode, with the window custom-sized to take up the entire screen except for the Windows menu bar at the bottom. That way I can switch to other applications without the hassle of that full-screen minimizing delay. These are the switches that I use:

-cpu1 -dd_sw -archive -wd -pxf1440 -pyf0827 -noFire

I just played with the size until I got it exactly right. BTW, I need the -noFire switch because my system is old things (video card plus whatever) can't keep up with the animations.

Almost forgot to mention that by using Tracker I also get any changes they've made to bases since the manual was done (it has not been updated), including the several new bases added in Scenario 28.

HansBolter -

I missed this distinction, thank you for the clarification.
