invasions

Post by samthesham »

I am trying to drop a marine regiment onto an island. There is a Jap base force there for sure, maybe nothing else. I don't even get shot at when I am unloading. Then my invasion force "re-embarks" and nothing is left on the island! What am I missing here? A TF commander with aggression? Lack of planning points on the mariner regiment itself? Why would they re-embark? Is it possible that the regiment units that land all become disabled? Clearly a lot ARE disabled. What am I missing here?

Ground units get disrupted at sea. The longer they are at sea, the more they get disrupted. Landing causes disruption. Even if unloading on an empty beach, they will suffer some disruption. I suspect all the combat squads were disrupted and there was nothing left to attack with and hence the evacuation.

Is this "disrupted" shown as "disabled" when I am actually looking at the unit? They only traveled a few islands, but there has been some moving around before that.

No. Look at the left-hand side of the display. You will see things like Experience, Morale, Fatigue, Disruption. All are important. High disruption is a major killer - if you order a unit with high disruption to attack it stands a high chance of getting shredded. Fatigue is also important, but you can get away with higher fatigue numbers. Morale you want to be as high as possible, Experience too.

I am not convinced that accumulated disruption incurred as a result of days at sea is working properly.

In my last game I evacuated the entire III Indian Corps from Singapore. Each unit loaded aboard ships, steamed to Batavia, then to Colombo, stayed aboard ship in Colombo for anywhere up to a week, then finally shipped to Rangoon. The units were aboard ship for weeks. They all arrived at Rangoon with almost no disruption at all.

Are they on a "transport" or "amphibious" TF?

and isn't there a passage in the manual about if the landing forces are less than certain odds, they reembark?  different odds for allies and IJ. ... can't locate it now as not handy ....
