How to break German defences as Russian

Hello everyone,

I am playing Russian and it is Spring 1942.
Russians have advanced to within 8 squares of Kiev and taken Smolensk.
Spring has come and a German attack is being stopped.
But my question is:
The Germans are entrenched behind a fortified river line for much of the front.
I am attacking with 3 or 4 to 1 superficial odds but cannot get 1-1 or better attacking the German fortifications built over the winter.
What is the best way to structure a Russian attack to break a German fortified line with 3 or 4 to 1 Russians going against Germans entrenched in fortifications.
I am losing a lot of men and it is a skill I must learn.

Can't underrate the sappers matt, attach a lot of them directly to the units attacking.
Tons of German pioneers did marvels for me around Leningrad.
