Damaged ships helped at sea by an AR?

Post by Hanzberger »

Just wondering if you have a damaged ship that is close to a port but maybe not close enough, if you send an AR to join it will it help in any way. (repair)

A question similar to this. Do ships recover from crippling damage (fires, life threatening flooding, ect) faster if they're in a TF with undamaged ships rather then alone? When you read about the war and ships that were damaged there are almost always other ships in the TF that would come alongside to render aid. Helping to put out fires, or to tow a disabled ship.

Is this modeled in some fashion? Would a destroyer with serious flooding and fires better recover from them when grouped with several other destroyers vs if it were alone?

I've seen developer comments in the past that the code allows for some type of help, but it was left very vague. Really don't have a concrete answer.

The only correlation I've maybe, possibly seen is that very large ships like BBs and CVs tend to recover from a little minor damage while still at sea, often while in transit to the yards. Not a lot, but 3-5ish points of System and minor flooding. This makes sense given the large crew, more space for DC gear, more redundant electric and pumps, etc.

I don't know what variable this capability would reside in if it exists though. Durability maybe?

I'm just hoping that what happened IRL was modeled to some extent. The problem is I don't know how effective say a destroyer helping to fight a fire on a carrier was or if it was effective at all IRL. You read about that sort of thing, but I've never seen any real analysis of whether it made a difference or not. ie: Did the destroyer spraying water on the CV help fight the fire, or just get the CV's personnel wet.

I know towing isn't modeled in game from past threads. But it would be nice if the actual damage control that was conducted ship to ship IRL was. Things like firefighting, taking off of wounded and fresh damage control parties shifted over. A ship that might have lost control of the fires or sunk due to flooding if left to its own resources should have a better shot at instead bringing fires under control, or halting and reversing (minor) flooding while in a TF with other undamaged ships.

Yes, there is some FIREFIGHTING help from other undamaged ships in a TF. Only firefighting.

I have to believe that a cruiser CO wouldn't hazard his command to take her bow right into a burning CV's side (USS St. Paul I think in a famous photo?) unless it had some utility. A ship alongside can get at angles that the burning ship's crew can't reach, especially by spraying directly into the hangar deck if it's been evacuated.

I've read first-person DC accounts by the crewmen of the USS Stark after she was hit by an Exocet missile in the Perisan Gulf. The general public never got a lot of that in the media, but that ship should have sunk. Heroic measures by her crew. The thing that comes through over and over was how big a factor crew fatigue was. Just overwhelming physical activity required, hour after hour, with adrenelin and fear poisons in the mix.

Again, I don't know how it's coded or on what variables, but it sure seems like carriers can put out fires a lot faster than smaller ships. As for towing, I've always figued that was included in the top speed of highly damaged ships. Even though they're on Cruise, at 2 knots I figure it's a tow.

Ooo thank you for this tidbit. Nice to know that we're rewarded for historical behavior.

I did not know that.

I kinda thought they might help. I know they will rescue crews from sinking vessels.

Just tried this the last turns in the Taraaw battle and NO AR repair only if docked or ancored it seems. Maybe as they have no own cargo space they also need to rely on supllies from a port ?

I have also seen that large ships (in my case North Carolina) repair some sys dam in a 2 TF escort TF with a DD on sea. Of course slow rate..

Well for damages transports, other ships can rescue their load when they sink. [:D]

Is this true? What about troops?

Other ships can rescue specifically troops. I'm not sure about guns etc. Ships won't rescue supplies or resources.

I wouldn't think supplies and equipment transfer between ships at sea in a damaged/sinking situation. AE's cannot transfer ammo at sea until sometime in 1945.
