New to Series

Greetings!

As the subject states, I am completely new to this series. I saw the thread on Wargamer.com and the title intrigued me. I reviewed the Product Info page but it relates back to "fans of the original Panzer General." Anyone willing to provide some insight into the PG series for me?

That is a link to "Panzer General Forever" which this game will be taking many ideas from. Play that a while and get familiar with how units and everything works. Slight learning curve there, but nothing very serious especially if you are fluent in more involved hex wargames.

I still play PGF at times and like the rest here are waiting patiently on the new release of PC.

Appreciate the posts. The diary didn't offer much in terms of specific gameplay. Again, seeing how I have never played the original, any information that relates to it is beyond me.

@csdc83 - Thanks for the link. I downloaded the PGF. I'll give it a try and see what I can learn. There doesn't seem to be a manual, only a FAQ. Would you be willing to walk me through a turn?

That link has a PDF file inside it that has the original Panzer General manual which has everything. I should have posted that much earlier today in the original post, but I though PG Forever had it.

That looks like a lot to digest at first, but after some easy reading everything will make sense. If you are well versed in WW2 weapons than you probably already know the tanks, artillery, infantry, etc and what they do in battle.

Quick and Dirty on PG2
 
PG2 is a turn based game at roughly battalion/regiment level. No unit stacking.  Each unit is modeled relatively historically in that a '39 German Inf unit does not have the same ratings as a '44 unit would. This would reflect the improved anti-tank capabilities, etc of the later units.  This holds true for tanks and oplanes as well wrt different ratings.
 
I have always played campaigns but there are scenarios based on historical battles that can be played. But the real fun is the longest german campaign you can find. [;)] imho
You start with a mixed arms core force (around 7-8 units?) and this core force stays with you during the campaign from one battle to the next.  The units gain experience which improves its abilites in combat. Depending on how well you do on each scenario, an amount of prestige points were given which allows you to add units to your core force.  At the beginning you probably wouldn't have any aircraft but by the time you invade France you had to have a few.
 
So the campaign continued through the war from one battle to another, Spain, Poland, Netherlands, Finland, Norway, etc...
 
Its really a lot of fun and the folks making this are dedicated to the mission in a big way. It is a testament to the PG series that after, what, 20 yrs people still play a version of PG in one form or another. [&o] I still play a free version of PG2 called Open PG. PG has been on my hard drive of many PCs over the years.
