New player - good starting out battles?

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

New player - good starting out battles?

Post by alcamatraz »

Firstly, hi all, finally forked out the cash for BFTB.

Am very excited about it, have skimmed the manual, watched some vids, done the tutorial mission...

Then I tried a real mission, got destroyed (can't remember which I did, but was axis).

Any pointers on some scenarios that would represent a slightly easier challenge for a new player?(given that I don't want to 'cheat' by artificially stacking it in my favour)

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the game!
Try Hell on wheels counterattack as USA. Don't waste your time assaulting too much, you don't really have the time. Just move until contact and overwhelm the Germans with manuever. Check the attack toggle box when you make contact if you want to put up a fight.

Did I altogether miss this "attack toggle box" feature?

Task Options:
Top right hand of the context options - where you set aggression/rate of fire and losses. There are three tick boxes for ambush (fairly useless), attacks, bypass.
Only active for defend, move (and a few other orders).

Ambush is not terribly useful as minimum visibility/detection ranges seem to be ~200m-300m and the maximum & ambush range for the units that really need to use it (infantry AT, predominantly SMG infantry) is usually much shorter. (It can be useful for improving lethality and increasing the target's exposure for tanks/AT guns deployed in towns/urban areas).

See page 63 of the manual.

Tnx: the "toggle" thing threw me.

Thanks for the advice all.

Indeed, I was able to complete the hell on wheels as the Allies.

(curse this game) I now need to achieve the opposite results as axis.

Having lots of fun, and getting the hang of it now. The various ways of viewing the command structure were confusing me, but figured it out now.

Cheers!

Me too to begin with. I recently bought COTA which doesn't have them and boy do I miss that new addition.
