So it looks like the only way to do PBEM is to create a gmail account?!  That makes no sense to me especially since you can also set the game up to notify you at your regular email address that you have a turn at your gmail address.  Am I misunderstanding this?

That is correct. Typically what we beta testers have done is create a username.supernova@gmail.com account. The game will automatically check the mail for received turns in your game and send them. I created a separate gmail account for it even though I had my own. You can just set it up then forget about it because the game will handle the rest.
