1.8.05 PBEM Editor

Is there a how-to document about using the PBEM editor? Whenever I make any changes and then create backup files (usually during the land combat phase, when errors come up), the game resets to the January reinforcement phase. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug in the editor?
