P-40 pool in 12/41

Post by Buck Beach »

A little preface here, I only have one source for the following information but thought I would throw it out to the modding community.

The book "Racing the Sunrise" goes into considerable detail relating to the flow or troops and equipment from just proceeding the beginning through the first few months of the war. There are two chapters that I found very interesting and will cause me to tweak my mod as it relates to the P-40s and P-39s. They are "Airplanes for ABDA" and "Frantic Efforts to Reinforce Hawaii and Its Outposts"

From the latter, by 12/24/41, two convoys out of SF (No.s 2005 & 2004) delivered 112 P-40Es (as well as 8 P-39Ds) to Hawaii that well made up for the 46 Army fighters lost in the attack.

From the other chapter, Bloemfontein (of the Pensacola Convoy) delivered 18 P-40Es on 12/22/41; SS President Polk 55 more to Brisbane on 1/12/42; SS Mromacsun another 67 on 1/19/42; the Maiposa and President Coolidge, 51 P-40Ed and 19 P-39s, on 2/02/42 and the USS Hammondsport still another 111 P-40Es on 2/05/42.

I won't try to go into any details regarding the disposition of the aircraft (such as forming new fighter squadrons) but thought this was information many of you would like and maybe research further for your own mods.

Buck

Just as an additional note the aircraft far exceeded the pilots available in Australia in those early months.

I was reading something similar a few months ago and thought we have been short changed. Once I started looking at what squadrons appear in Australia, I realized that for the most part they are all accounted for in game. The provisional squadrons that show up in Brisbane are the planes that were shipped in for the PI and DEI. They were assembled there and for the most part were send to Darwin/Timor and a couple of other places. It was not long the the provisional squadrons were disbanded. I would not tweek too much. [;)]

Don't forget a large number of P-40's went down with USS Langley. Some of the aircraft that were shipped to Oz are hard to deal with in game. The pilots and ground crews arrived in Manila in the last week of November 1941. The airframes were bound there on 7 December 1941 (some in the Pensacola convoy). In reality the sq should be in Manilla with pilots and no aircraft. The aircraft should arrive in Oz with aircraft and no pilots. The problem is that there is nothing to stop the players from withdrawing the Sq with Aircraft and then taking replacements from the pool to fill out the units in the PI.

Yes, I am aware of there being at least five being formed in Australia in those time frames and still others originating on the East Coast USA. I am really uncertain how to account for those East Coast babies but if I consider those squadrons were shipped w/o a/c that still is around a total of 175 leaving the rest to the pool (which is where the PI and DEI needs to come from). This of course doesn't account for any of those delivered earlier to Hawaii.

I don't consider the Langley to have happened in the game, so again those a/c will be in my pool. Thanks for the reply.

Oh BTW there is only one player in my game and I cheat on myself all the time.[;)]

A good deal of research went into how many airframes were available early in the game.  I believe all the airframes were accounted for in game, or close to it.

The OOB is not perfect.  With something this large it's impossible to be perfect.  However, the OOB is probably the most thoroughly researched of any game of this type ever done.
