Saved game load time
Loading a saved game for a Random Campaign is taking 4 - 4½ minutes, mostly 'Loading database'. I'm guessing that this isn't normal?

No, that doesn't sound normal, but I'm guessing it's loading a 2km map.
Thanks

But even on my slow machine that is long load time
Thanks

RE: Saved game load time
I have had VERY long load times on a couple scenarios. Always sticks on database load.
But it is longer then CM2, so I just live with it.

RE: Saved game load time
After 30 minutes of being stuck on "loading database" I logged off from my PC. This has happened the first time I loaded the game and again this morning, when I loaded the save game (this is when after at least 30 minutes, I logged off the PC).

Hi Teddy,
What scenario were you loading and what are your system specs?

RE: Saved game load time
Hi Erik,
the specs that i have are;
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ 2.10 Ghz, 32-bit OS and 1gb of RAM.
PCK an OWS had loading times of @ 5 minutes, FoF maybe a little more and TC2M & RTW are @ 2-3 minutes. But this particular game is breathtakingly slow.
Oh, and the Scenario is one of the Lipki ones (not a very big scenario to be fair).

That seems a LOT slower than normal. What scenario was this in? The amount of Ram might be cause for some of this. Was it a 2km map?
EDIT; sorry I see Lipki -
thanks

Lipki is a 1500m map. these do tend to use more RAM I think. that might be what you're seeing with your system. I have a low end laptop and i'll try it on there later today and see what I get for comparison.
Thanks

I have 2g ram but share 256 with the GPU. Lipke map is really a strain on my system. It's the trees I think. Dangerous Information uses a 1500 map and plays really well for me.

RE: Saved game load time
Gosh I don't know the exact one Rick. Save file only has what I named the file as. All I can tell you is that there are only two lines of German units comprising of 2 units of tanks (8 tt), @ 3 PG units, 2 mortar units, 2 Field Guns and 2 HMG units. There are @ a dozen Soviet tanks coming down the road towards Lipski and my fellas have to stop them taking the village. I don't want to go into the game again to find out the exact one 'cos it takes so long.
FoF tells me I don't have the system requirements to play the game but apart from the 6/7 minute delay in starting, it plays really smoothly.

Thanks, Rick. That would be helpful. My configuration is as follows;
Refresh - 66hz, LOW Texture and Detail, 0 in both AA & AF and my Video Adapter is "NVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 405."
Once you get into the scenario it is a bit of a lag but mostly smooth. It's just the loading time...

teddy,
I installed the PCO release on my older laptop. This is a single core, 1.5Ghz Celeron processor with 32-64MB of shared video mem. and 2GB of Ram total. So a pretty minimal system.
The load time for the Lipki scenario on this box is about 13-15 min. I notice I do have more Ram than your system, so maybe that's what is limiting on yours. Oh, and once Lipki is loaded on my laptop, I can't really play it all all, I can barely get the mouse to move. It does 'ok' on smaller scenarios with smaller and plainer maps.
thanks

Okay Rick. I'll just stick to smaller maps/scenarios. Thanks for looking into this for me - it is appreciated.

You can try some of the other larger maps and see if some of them might work better.
Thanks!

RE: Saved game load time
Lipki takes a longer than average time to load on my machine as well. That scenario has a lot of grass in it. That could be the issue.
I may look at cutting back on some of the grass to make that scenario more user friendly.
Good Hunting.

RE: Saved game load time
Some maps just require more hardware, but I've never had anything like a 30 minute load time. On our three year old test systems, the biggest maps take a few minutes to load, then perform fine once loaded. Optimizing the load process is definitely something we can do in the future, it's currently not particularly optimized.

RE: Saved game load time
I've tried Mcensk Recon this morning and that only took 5 minutes to load up. What I'm worried about is playing a campaign and coming to one of these scenarios where I would have to give up on because of the vast loading time in some scenarios. Like I said before, PCK & OWS worked fine. It might be a case where I just install those two again and just play that again 'cos I know they will work.

RE: Saved game load time
Ostfront is actually a fair bit faster than Kharkov and Winterstorm performance-wise, but we put that extra performance to use in the improvements we made, but if you load one of the older scenarios you should see that it works faster. All the historical campaigns should be safe for you map-wise. For the random campaigns, they come with a map list and you can edit out the larger maps if you want so that you can be sure you won't get to one that takes a ridiculously long time to load on your system.
