Which way the water flows?

Location Verkhny is on the Kolyma River. The map shows it flowing North,
to the Arctic ocean. In fact, it flows to Magadan - capital of the Kolyma
Region - and a sister city to Anchorage. A former gulag, it had no churches
until the Catholic Church in Alaska sent missionaries in the last generation.
It is a gold mining area - similar to Alaska.

Anyway - the Kolyma River has four times the flow of the Mississippi -
and is navigable all the way to Verkhny. In between lies the significant
town of Myakit.
