what multi player server do you have to make account on to get the friends copy? Can i buy, download and gift and have nothing to do with steam.

I'm pretty sure the MP system is a completely separate set up run by the game developers.

Here's the easiest way to do it:

To send a copy of the game to a friend, please do the following:

1.) Email your friend with your original license key and this link http://www.frozensynapse.com/fsFriend.html

2.) Your friend may now use your license key to make an account
