Someone Shoot Me. Please

Post by Panama »

Making a 10km map of the Soviet Union. Astrakhan on the east end. Little past Warsaw on the west end. Baku on the south. A bit north of Helsinki on the north. But the maps are in pieces and all mercator. So of course nothing really touches. And the farther north you go the worse it gets. Of course.

My brain is toasted.

BTW, a friend printed out the help files for ODD. Makes it a bit more bearable.

Maybe use HexThingy to lay down some general reference points, then use your maps to fill in the blanks ?

Curtis' Lat-Long thing really can't be beat here.

And as sPzAbt653 suggests, you can just locate a few points if you're willing to accept a little imprecision.

One or more Ost Front scenarios. I think I finally have enough crap piled up, er, information gathered to be able to do some reasonable ones.

Used to create my Soviet Union 1941 map.

I tested out several things. Lat Long would be fine however, the map has no lat long lines so I would have to DRAW them in. My mind shuts down at that prospect and I have to reboot. 300 plus maps. The only lines are the 10km universal transverse mercator grid. Which is great for a 10km map, eh? I could fudge along and guess where the horizontal lines break for the odd columns.

I could feed them one at a time into ODD.

I know at 10km they can't be perfect but I'd like to get them close.

I always use Google Earth for the physical features (aside from reservoirs). The historical maps only come into play for putting in roads, railways...and reservoirs. Once the physical features and place names are located properly, one can put in the historical roads easily enough -- and modern routes tend to be the same, so usually Google Earth can resolve any questions there as well.

Towns I go to http://www.populstat.info/populhome.html to get actual population figures.

Anyway, using Google Earth, Curt's Lat-long thing becomes a snap. I just put in the coordinates for any given hex and see where the point actually is.
