Roads through mountains

Post by Jafele »

It´s not allowed to build roads or railroads through mountains. It´s neccesary tons of explosives, raw and tunnels. I know it´s difficult to do, although not impossible. Perhaps with a high cost in engineering points and materials could be possible. What do you think?

Keep it the way it is; no roads through mountains.
Ofcourse you're right, it's always possible to find a route through a mountainous area in real life. But with gameplay in mind I don't think it would be an improvement. With some maps it either is a major obstacle to overcome, or a great defense for your empire. So I'm inclined to say, no roads through mountains.

I know that in WWI "roads" were built in the Alps. They were just gravel tracks narrow in some sections and wider in other sections. These were used and needed to get guns to the front and keep the soldiers in supply with everthing that a army needed in those days.
Today these roads are ideal for mountain bikers and you can get guided tours there too.

If roads were to be built in mountain terrain, then it would have to be tracks good enough for infantry and horses but not like a major autobahn where tanks and trucks (lorries) could travel along.
Train tunnels? These take years to build, so really a war would be finished before such a feat could be completed.

My 2 cents would be minor roads/tracks yes, major roads and rail no.

You can build roads through mountains... in ATG as well as in the original AT.

All's you need to do is move the engineer unit onto the mountain and build the road, into a non-mountain hex.

Note that this means you can't build a road running from one mountain hex to another mountain hex.

Hehe... I do this all the time.

Also, with ATG, I have seen games that START with roads (well, railroads) running through mountains.

Building roads through mountains should be allowed, if players don't want to use it, they should use the editor to set the cost to some impossible level.
