My Latest: A Brief Look

Post by AlanBernardo »

I'm playing the Italy-Greece scenario, and here's a progress report.

Image

I'm playing the Italy-Greece scenario as Italy. I'm six turns in. There's not much room for producing units, as I've found out. Supply is low and has been now for a few turns.

The shot here is from the eastern edge of the map, some seven hexes in. Italy starts the scenario with 70 VPs. She wins with 85, and I am not ten short. Greece begins with 30 and wins with 45. If no one gets to these numbers after 19 turns, the game is a draw.

There are other rules specific to this scenario, which is a very good one, IMO.

Only two Italian urban areas can produce units, as far as I can tell, both being in the northwest. There are periodic reinforcements, and no research.

Supply thus far has been quite a problem. For the past two or three turns that is all I've produced. A lot of the map is mountainous, so armor is somewhat useless, except when driving through patches of plains.

As in most cases in ATG and especially in this scenario with the rugged terrain, traveling on roads is a must. Plodding through low and high mountains would take entirely too long.

I am moving a considerable force into the Kastoria area, a city worth five VPS. I have air divisions in the area and some also a little farther south, where there is also some fighting going on.

Here is what is happening in the south. The city of Ioannina, directly to the south of the three-hex lake, is another VP worth five points. Here all of my divisions are low on supplies, which I aim to fix in the next turns.

I'm going to have to swing around and hit Ioannina from the south, possibly. I do plan some feints to the north, to draw enemy troops. There are some clear hexes on the road to Iaonnina, and a push through that are is another option. I have two medium tanks that I will bring to this area, and I will use them, with a leading rifle-machine gun contingent, to try and punch some holws in the enemy defensive line. I also have a few Artillery Divisions.

The only other area with any action is in the west, where I've moved one division onto Greek territory and after winning a few naval battles-- this clearing the area-- I have an HQ on the way. I will then supply the HQ and attempt capturing another five VP hex, this time the city of Kerkira.

It's all going to be a tricky balancing act trying to keep all my units in supply and prepared to move on the offensive.

I do not have a lot of turns remaining.

I fixed things, so that the text isn't so hard to read. :)

Alan, it's good to see you keeping the AAR section active.  Good luck with the game.
Good to see you posting these as images post-by-post (by the way, you don't need to store the images on-line).

Access to your game is a lot easier with this method.

I hope the above images and text are not awkward reading.

Looking forward to updates!

And I "second" th1207 - the text and background color combo in pics 2 & 3 is brutal.

I was just experimenting. But I can read the text in 2 and 3 pretty well, and wouldn't call it "brutal".

I may report back near the end of the scenario, to give a last update. But there will be nothing more than that. :)

I can't read the text without some real straining. But I do not have "normal" color vision.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

I appreciate your efforts, and look forward to the AAR!

I'm not trolling, but I used the word "brutal" because trying to read those last two was like having a knife stabbed into my eyes!

Yet I read them anyway, because I love a good AAR.

I understand. A knife to the eyes cannot be pleasant under any circumstances. :)

But I've edited my initial post, siding for the conventional look.

Game is over at turn 11, with Italy winning. I was able to capture three five-VP hexes, giving me the 85 needed for the win.

The last VP I took seemed to be there for the taking, up north:

I didn't have a whole lot of trouble in this area, though many of my divisions never made it to the front. Supply turned out okay, but I probably should have produced more trains so that I could have strategically transferred some of my divisions closer to the action.

Naval operations in the west and any attempt to land divisions on Greek territory and get them supplied totally failed.

The south also was developing into a disaster, where it seemed that most of the Greek Army was concentrated:

Out of laziness I didn't protect my supply route and some enemy divisions slipped through. It is unlikely that I would have gotten enough VPs within the turn restriction if I had to get one in this area. Luckily I snatched one up north.

Fun scenario. I had the AI on normal. Putting it to + or ++ would no doubt have been a better challenge. It just seemed that once I had captured a VP hex, the AI never tried to get it back.

Hi Alan. Cool that someone has played my scenario and does an AAR on it. I hope you liked it. The Italo Greek war is not so easy to make a scenario on because many factors contributed to the war being in many respects a stalemate.

I will try that one next. The Italy scenario was fun. But as I said, the AI at + or ++ probably would have given me a better game. The last 5-point VP was pretty much handed to me.

Thanks for the work on the scenario. I'm sure I'll enjoy Luzon.
