Telstra
Probably my Aussie mates will only understand my stunted joy. 8 months ago Telstra promised me ADSL 2 broad band with speeds up to 20 m/bs, well considering i'm about 800 metres from the exchange I figured speeds between 14/16 M/bs would an acceptable level Huh I jested with myself. Real terms at worst 1.5 and at best and rarely I might add about 5.5 M/bs. After some serious aggravating of senior Telstra and many telephone calls I managed to get some compensation, a 75% discount on my Internet bill for the past six month. Out of the blue yesterday, my phone and internet is disconnected, lost my phone services for 4 days last week. When I realized the phone was out, I hightail around to the local exchange, and here were 2 Telstra subcontractors tearing the exchange apart (slight to excessive inflation of the truth), however after a fruitful and polite discussion they told they were upgrading the internet facilities in the exchange and by the end of the day I would ADSL 2 speeds, I couldn't contain my excitement. Well after several hours of down time up come my phone and internet services. Needless to say the first thing I did was to run a speed check. Well done Telstra you managed to lift my average speed from around 3.5 to 7.5 M/bs. Well not quite half of the advertised speed, but still twice as fast as before. I wonder if i can negotiate a 50% discount this time. I wonder what has to happen to get near the maximum speed. I suppose peasants shouldn't complain. A foot note, there is no other ADSL 2 providers in this back wash of Gippsland. I'm not happy, but I guess I'm now less unhappy.

Watch out for being nickel and dimed. Our cable companies are notorious for that.
After 16 years, Civ II still has me in it's clutches LOL!!!
Now CIV IV has me in it's evil clutches!

RE: Telstra
the NBN will give everyone fast fibre to the home internet in OZ over the next 10 yrs; the ISP I work for is trialing 100/40 Mbps in Tassie and it rocks.
No more dodgy copper line issues, yay.
Just has to survive a couple more government elections though!

Try being in the real bush. Try Townsville and see what you get.
We have the choice of Telstra and errr OPTUS. Detest Telstra as they would sell you air and call it 1.5MB dl speed and OPTUS, well thats the alternate air.
Our so called ADSL 2 here is at the pace of a thousand raped turtles.
I know blokes in the big cities that have connections that are as fast as farts in a fan factory....ziiiiip.
....zzz...you get this yet? .......[packets lost]

Hey QM at least you get a choice. [:D]
Chris will the NBN be affordable for low income and pensioners. I got a feeling I'll be on a pension by the time it hits backwater of Gippsland. [>:]
Damian do you want your arms broken and your Broadband drawn and quartered [:@]
Joe, good grief, why too far from the exchange or old wire or too many people. the silly thing about me is I live about 800 metres from the exchange and get a 3rd of the capacity, good thing I don't live 10 clicks away it would be going backwards!

In comparison to certain Asian countries we are like third world when it comes to internet speed. I'm going to upgrade my connection to 50 or maybe 100 mbps later this year. But that still feels tremendously slow, regarding the common 1 gigabit lines in Hong Kong.

RE: Telstra
I have always wondered how ISP's can get away with offering usually less than half of what the advertised speed is.
Mine is quoted at 30 mbps down and 10 up but in reality I get about 13.4 down and 5.2 up.

I hope you had fun with their call centre. I had phone line problems last year and after numerous calls (which were the most frustrating telephone calls that I have ever made) and a couple of visits by technicians over a period of at least 5 days I got it fixed. But I really now understand why people become very angry with non country of origin call centres.

RE: Telstra
Well look at this! I started this thread several months ago when I was bitching with Telstra.
I posted that Telstra had just upgraded my Internet services and my speed jumped from about 3.5 to about 7 mb/s. and got a little excited. The truth was the service denigrated over a period a time back to around 4.5/5 Mb/s. I was so pissed off especially when I was getting regulars outages. So again I rang Telstra and again I started whinging, again the Telstra call centre dude says clear your history, check your connections check your modem etc etc etc. The Call Centre dude said the speed isn't bad for ADSL 1 I said I'm paying for ADSL 2. Let me check this sir came the answer, and after a short pause, I am very very sorry sir, it appears that the line codes haven't been changed and I will put a work order so the line codes can be changed, this will take 5 working days and your service will much faster, politely I said thank you and goodbye. My internet world is going to change for the better in a few short days, who am I trying to kid Ha. I waited patiently for a week no change surprise surprise! You guessed it I rang again and after pissing me around a bit the faults department decided to refer my issue the senior faults department (Sounds like Monty Pythons Ministry of Silly Walks, does it not
except its in the real world) anyhow I get a call from these guys a few days later, yep u guessed it clear your history, check your connections check your modem etc etc etc come again, until I erupted and I spat the dummy, I not going through this crap again I yelled, well after short silent pause the gentleman at the other end of the line regained his composure and said in his very best almost understandable accent we best get a technician to look into this matter, but it may at your expense. I won't publish my reply! Well Telstra has technicians well well well. Come on Ronnie don't get angry this poor dude is just reading his idiot sheet he just doing his job( breathe in breathe out, relax your getting there a technician a technician Telstra really has technician almost there say thank you and hang up). A technician will be in touch in a few days oh thank you I said and hung up. A few evenings later my internet connection crashes, and before I have a chance to get angry, I get a call from Telstra, checking to see if my service has improved, no it hasn't came my angry reply. Can you please run a speed check please sir, no I can't my service is out, it appears ok from this end sir, was the reply, to my embarrassment I found it was working again as I loaded up Mozilla! Can you run your speed check program please sir this guy politeness is start rub me up the wrong way, I run speedtest.net, what the..... 21.8 what's going on I smell a rat, ah stop complaining mission accomplished! [:D] [:D] After about 8 months I'm finally getting what I was promised. I have 2 things to say after this experience. If your a Telstra customer don't stop whinging, whining or complaining to you get what you were promised and secondly if you're got an ADSL 2 service and have poor speeds question Telstra about line activation codes, make sure they have been upgraded.
