DW: Creature Competition Thread

Post by Evil Steve »

I didn't see one, feel free to delete if another place:

THE NID

Forged in the heart of (high research) black holes, this solitary neutronium based arachnid forges a web out of gravity waves to trap matter before it blinks out of existance. Of enormous size and strength due to the twisting torque of high level gravity, the Nid has a stressed and short lifespan. Much of this lifespan in involved in sucking the core out of matter to create life: on its explosive death, the Nid propels its young into space, where they travel in stasis on gravity waves, themselves highly dense and gravitationally attactive to passing matter, matter on which they wake to feed until they reach their new home.

The adult Nid is highly dangerously, even to matter outside the wormhole. It has the inate ability to shoot out a gravity wave and pull in matter considered out of reach. The young Nids, still huge by any standard, are often lethal to passing ships and orbital structures, trapped as these ships are by the Nid's gravity field, and then consumed, on contact, by its awakened neutronium mandibles.

The Nid can only be killed by long range weapons.

THE NID! or should that be N'ID! ;)

A bit too early for entries, but what the heck if ideas are good.
I'm having kind of growing idea myself too. I'll wait for the Erik to announce the competition before I post the idea.

Anyway, nice idea Steve!

Them thar Gremlins would only be located in deep space because of......yep, BRIGHT LIGHT! BRIGHT LIGHT!

Seriously though.....   What about a creature that instead of physically destroying ships it attached itself to them and slowly drained them of all energy....killing the crew and leaving the ship floating in space in need of not only repairs, but a new crew????  These ships would also be able to be captured by your enemy's and destroyed by other monsters or enemy's.

This creature could be something that is made up of a swarm instead of one large beast.  Also, beam weapons wouldn't work....you'd have to have torpedo's or missiles to blast the swarm apart.

Or the derelict ship could still have the creatures on board (Alien or Event Horizon style?). Whoever repairs and claims the 'abandoned' ship would find its energy/life support gradually eroding and unless they were vigilant and somehow 'sanitised' the ship it would again become a drifting hulk waiting to claim another victim.

That's a nice touch...I like it!

OK, I'll play too.

Leviathan:

The Leviathan is an ancient, deep space dwelling creature that is rarely found near a planetary system, instead preferring the cold darkness of deep space. The Leviathan is very much like an Earth Octopus or Squid with multiple tentacles that it can use to ensnare its prey. Leviathans are capable of hibernating for thousands of years before being awakened by minerals that come into its range either by comets, asteroids, ships or dust/gas clouds. The Leviathan has one special trait that makes it particularly deadly to lone, unarmed ships; the ability to generate a hyperspace inhibiting field.

Stats:

Armor: 500
Health: 100
Firepower: 200 at Range 1

Special Ability: Hyperspace Inhibitor Field.

fuel or energy consuming creatures anyone? or better yet, caslon or hydrogen eating ones
energy absorbant so that beam weapons would not affect them; jamming capabilities for missiles or torps so that only close range fighters can take them on (targeting bonus against it for fighters only or a tech for this)

or a creature capable of destroying stars and everything in the star system implicitly

We concur. The DW needs really terrifying and dangerous creatures that pose threat even to a well developed empires. Ancient creatures born in the infinite void of space, cabable of destroying entire fleets, systems and consume moons and planets for energy.

Currently the creatures are somewhere between nuisance and minor threat.

That's just my 2 credits. Creatures are big part of DW so it would be extremely interesting to make them really powerful and cabable of playing a bigger role in the grand galactic scale.

Something like this perhaps:

Qualle:

These are essentially very large space jellyfish that feed on Caslon, Hydrogen, Argon, or Helium gases. Qualle are extremely docile creatures that will usually be found around gas giants and or gas clouds slowly lazily floating and feeding on the gases within. The will attack when provoked, usually by expelling an acidic, jelly-like substance from their main body. Qualle are a danger to ships because they are attracted to the concentrated refined gases contained in a ship or stations fuel cells.

Stats:

Armor 100
Health 500
Firepower 50 out to range 50

Special Ability: Drains fuel from stations and ships.

Always found in large 'schools'.

Hence Leviathan example...it can of course be made even more terrifying by simply upping the stats.

Great ideas, Shark7. No denying that. [:)]

I was going to write about my point more specifically, but then thought I'll post about my own "creature" when I get the idea finished.

If Igard's creature farms idea catches on we can even weaponize some of them, use them as we currently use pirates to attack others.

I think to have very rare creatures (not included in galactopedia, maybe) guarding certain areas that contain rare artifacts etc might be a great way to add to the exploration aspect of DW.
