Open Sheaf

Post by JJKettunen »

Hi,

I don't know if this is a known issue, but after experimenting with mortar placement in Kursk North -campaign, it seems to me that Open Sheaf for artillery works properly only in East-West orientated battles. When a battle is North-South orientated the targets of Open Sheaf are lined from North to South, so it is not possible to place, for example, a wide smoke screen, but only a narrow and deep corridor of smoke in front of your troops. Sure it spreads out a little, but obviously this cannot be WAD? I'm using the latest public update.

That's the way the open works. There is sort of a grain. In some scenarios it goes one way, in another it goes the other.

Is there a way to change it? I repositioned German mortars with the editor, but it didn't matter. That's why I suspect that Open Sheaf works properly only in battles with East-West orientation.

You can cancel the artillery right after you position it. Placing it at different spots on the map sometimes changes its direction. It seems something to do with quadrant of the map.

In this case it doesn't solve the issue.

I wish it would simply work like the old "Target Wide" option for indirect fire in Combat Mission. That simply widened the (circular) area around which the shells would congregate. This linear system is a pain - except for smoke (where it's wonderful).

What would be ideal is a 2-step process of 1) place the sheaf and 2) orient the linear direction.

I don't know what target wide is so I can't say if it is realistic or not. PCO just uses open and converged.
Someone made a page with their ideas on sheafs. The sizes are not exactly PCO which are in meters but they are reasonably close.
