How important is Nogrorod to the defense of Leningrad or how much does it help the Germans to have it early. I see many AAR where the Germans have no rush to take it very early. If you can get it for free with a fight take it right.

novgorod+bridgehead across volkhov = right hook threat, also unhinges luga-line. but this really only comes into play when you are not able to cut the the leningrad railway directly and early on, i think.
Reminder: The novice studies tactics, the master studies logistics.

The Soviets have to hold it, otherwise they will have trouble. Once adequately garrisoned however, the Germans will go either west or south of it and it will then be bypassed and completely unimportant. Don't over-garison it as the Soviets. I have found that there will often be a pocket at Novgorod.

So if as the Germans you can get it early totaly free by all means do so then.
