What is the best use for the CVE Long Islan? 16 plane capacity. Will it operate like a small carrier? Is it best used to ferry carrier capable A/C to fly away to fleet carriers or bases?

Carrier training of carrier-capable units.

Transport of planes to bases is a good use of the LI.  Remember to try and keep her out of harms way.

That's not possible in War in the Pacific - you are thinking of the Admirals Edition.

I used the Long Island as an ASW carrier by embarking a Marine SBD uniit available at the beginning of the game. I assign several 4-stacker destroyers to complete the task force. I station it near the Rennell Islands until Henderson Field is operational, and then move the SBD's there.

The SBD's haven't killed a subs, but they have harassed them.

I use the LI mostly to ferry Marine and USAAF fighters, but sometimes I stock it with Marine TBF:s on ASW and have it in a TF with flushdeckers following important troop convoys in sub infested waters.
