Ship Crew Experience

Post by JohnDillworth »

11/42
Allied carriers. Enterprise has been in 4 major scrapes and has given way more than she has gotten. Saratoga has managed to get sub-torpedoed twice and pretty much done nothing else. Both ships have 55/55 experience. In fact, all allied carriers have somewhere between 50 and 55 experience. No more. Does ship crew experience count twords anything? If so, why is it not possible to increase through constant victorious activity?

I think victorious air combat only increases air groups' exp. After all, CVs are "just" sailing back & forth to launch planes then.

Ship exp needs to include either surface combat or successful defensive actions vs. attacks.

I don't know how big the effect of ship experience is for avoiding hits, but I'd imagine it has effect. Plus with Damage Control.

I think ship experience also effects AA guns.

IMO on of the small flaws in this game is that some units or ships just can't get experience. For example AA units. Once I had 8 japanese AA regiments in Burma, and they were shooting allied bombers almost daily for a 2-3 months. Not a single unit got any experience doing what they are supposed to do. Apparently land unit have to be in land combat to get experience? But that's not a good place for a AA unit...

So Japanese carriers will always have more experience than American carriers? The Enterprise is shooting up everything is sight and never, ever gains any experience. Seems flawed unless ship experience has no bearing on anything except surface combat. I guess that's the case because my BB's are slowing gaining experience. Most have seen surface combat and most are about 60/55. Not bad but not as good as the Brits who are at about 70/60 without any combat.
thanks

I have had surfaces ships (Boise) in the fight from day one. They have been at sea most of the time and have participated in multiple actions-some sucessful, some not. Yet the experience gain for any of my ships has been small. These crews are hard core veterans by now but don't expect them to gain much in exp. However, commanders do improve, and taking that with better equipment, ship quality, aircraft, and torpedoes that actually work and the Allied ships seem to be better. If you go to the editor and look, you will see that almost all Allied warships that arrive before 1/44 has just average crew skills. And suddenly any Allied ships that Arrives after 1944 starts will have excellent crew qualities (usually in the 70s range) That is just the way it is.

I would love to be be able to set a ship or task force to "Training" as we do air squadrons. Take them out of the fight , send them somwheres safe , and set them to train in ASW, air defense, convoying, bombardment , surface combat, minesweeping, amphibious assault, replenishment, and flight ops. Just like was done in real life.

You must be one of my brothers in spirit. I love having to train pilots and deciding what I'm going to need 6 months later. Only to find out I blew it[:D]

The question about ship's crews also pertains to their captains.... or the "Admiral" in charge... does anyone know if these chaps change in experience, aggression, etc.... I'm not seeing anything in my game... it looks like most of not all of the characteristics are "fixed".... can anyone expand, explain??? Thanks in advance... Hal

"Training" as a TF mission could have been nice, indeed. Wonder if that can be implemented...

i recall reading in the manual that when a new ship arrived from production, you were advised to take it on a 'shake-down' cruise (presumably to improve its exp ratings). i've never done that, however, wouldn't careful attention to ship-captain's ratings improve a ship's ability to improve? similarly to the way you'd select a high-value leader to command an important air group?

I have many ships with 99 experience- including carriers. It takes time and some action, but they do improve rather well.... But training option woul'd be nice. [&o]

The game simulates the european war and that's the reason for the good experience of the british warships. Another example are the british DD's with good experience in ASW. --> Earned in Europe and Atlantic or Mediterranean Sea. That's it. The US Fleet has no great experience due to come to war later as the other allies. The good experience of the japanese fleet is justified in preperation for war and many many many exercises in sea with new tactics and new philosophy. I apologize for my bad english.

Japanese ships or American? AI or pbemail? I would love to hear how you are doing it. I have never seen a ship with that experience level.
