TCP/IP

Post by ETF »

I was told a while back TCP/IP WEGO was supported by Osfront?

IMHO this is one of the few areas that ticks me off with CMBN as they do not have it.

Thanks

No, we don't have TCP/IP. But with the automatic file exchange with dropbox, you and your opponent can play turns as fast as you can with TCP/IP.

Little confused with dropbox....can one can work on turns at the same time as in CMAK and CMBB?
Would drop box not be like ancient hotseating a feature released in the mid 80's?

There is a video showing how the PCO PBM system works. You shouyld be able to find it in the PCO section. PCO does have a 'hotseat' mode, but that isn't how the PBM using Dropbox (or any other online file sharing service, it doesn't have to be Dropbox).

Once the game is in play, after initial setup that is, then yes, if both players are online at same time, then they could both be playing. It was pretty common during testing for j2d and I to exchange turns and while I was issueing my orders and resolving combat he would be doing the same so that when I finished one turn, I'd find another waiting for me.

If you doni't have the full game yet, you can still find someone with the Demo and try the PBM using Dropbox. It's functional in the Demo.

Not sure if that answered your questuion or not.

Thanks

von Staudt and I routinely play "online" against each other. We sign into Skype, start the game, one of us sends a turn and then we both working on a turn at the same time, while talking on Skype.

Each turn is an actual PBEM turn that can simply be answered immediately if you like. While this is not a "pure" TCP/IP mode of play it works very well and can be made into a conventional PBEM game at anytime since you already have the turn.

Good Hunting.

Fair enough. Sounds workable. Curious was it too costly to implement a true TCP/IP option?

Not necessarily. To be honest, I actually prefer this approach. It plays a lot like TCP/IP in that the turns occur as fast as the opponent finishes his turns, yet if one of you has to break away, you can do so at any point with no planning or wrapping up. and you can continue on at your own leisure playing turns hours apart, until you are both back online together.

Thanks

Erik always talked about looking into it since Koios Tin Soldiers supposedly has it.

The method we have though, once set up (quick and easy) automatically sends the save file to your dropbox folder. No hassles setting up through firewalls and ports either.
