Population Growth Question

Post by Ironoverkill »

I've been playing DW for a little while, fell in love, and recently got RotS. Since then, I have noticed something interesting about my population growth. Playing as the Securan, when my first colony is colonized, the population growth rate is around 23% or so, but after a few seconds, it plummets down to 7-8%. This is on a 80-90% quality desert planet. Is this due to lack of luxury resources off the bat or is this a genuine bug? The Gizurean has the same problem, the colony initially starting at 27% or so and dropping down to 7-8% after a few seconds. Tax automation is off and the tax rate is set to 0%. I tried another game with the Teekan and nearly the same thing happened, starting off at 13% (or whatever their default reproduction rate is) and seconds later dropping down to about 4%.

In one Securan game I played, I noticed that when certain resources (or maybe population?) were dropped off, the happiness of the colony temporarily spiked to +20, while the growth rate dropped to 1%. When the effect wore off, the approval would drop down to +1, but the growth rate popped back up to 8% or so. That game, however, had taxation automated.

Any advice? Or is this completely normal?

Hi Ironoverkill and welcome to the forum. If anything with a starting colony the pop growth should be bigger than normal; the docs also state the same

"Population growth
Small colonies have faster population growth: when a colony has less than 500 million people, then population growth receives a 50% bonus.
....
"

How much pop do you have on those initial colonies? Does it reproduce with every new colony? We also need to check the race / gov pop growth bonuses to make sure you're not going below them; what gov do you use with each race?

okay your population growing dropps down because the new colonies do not have luxury goods. I think i read that a colony needs 10 different luxury goods to get up to the full potentional growth that your race can have. If your colonies have all good which they need and if you dont take taxes your colonies will grow very fast. For example a human colonie would grow with 16-17%

If you take taxes this growing gets minimized for each % taxes you loose 1% population growing.

Here i also see a balance problem because i think if you really want you can overgrow the KI. If you let grow all your colonies to 2000-3000M you have so much money to crush the KI because they always take the max amount of taxes even if the colony only brings them 1k credits they will take the money instead of more population growth which would be better in the later stages of the game because then the colony would give them an income like 60k instead of 1k.
Dont know if its the same in ROTS but i dont have the addon

It seems to be the exact same with every race and every colony. The growth rate plummets after a few seconds, and slowly grows to the default rate, in a few cases it surpasses the default reproduction rate, but rarely by much. So to answer your questions, Data, The initial colonies seem to start out with about 30M and are occasionally bumped up by 10M or so by passenger ships, but the growth rate stays low. This growth rate issue seems to occur with every colony. I also usually use the unique gov. types; Hive Mind with Gizurean, Utopian Paradise with Securan, and Mercantile Guild with Teekan. Even the Utopian Paradise with it's +40% growth modifier doesn't seem to offer any aid to the issue.

Thx for the details, I'll definitly check this as well. Following on Seath suggestions you can set the tax to 0 and use the editor to give them 10 luxury resources (or 2 or 5, etc), check what the pop growth is after that.
