RL-Light machine gun placement

Were the 30 Cal, 303 Vickers and 303 Lewis on fixed mounts or were they somewhat portable as to be use on either side of a ship? If they were the latter would it be appropriate to reflect them as center mounts?

In Submarines of World War Two it says the Vickers was portable - and removed before diving. Similar Browning .30s were so handled on US submarines - and indeed even on destroyers - long after WWII - my second ship had two - which we could manpack on a langing party - or mount on the ship side. Even Browning .50s could be used in either role (we had two of those as well) - so it is hard to imagine a .30 that could not be.
