Creating Conversions

Post by jakla1027 »

Hello,

So im wondering how to go about creating a ship conversion in the game editor. Example: Say i want to creat a conversion option for the Omaha Class cruisers to convert to a CLAA or CVL version. I know a few people have built the artwork for such conversions, but how would i go about creating/editing that in the AE game editor. Right now in the standard game (with latest beta patch) i just have have an upgrade option for the Omaha Class, but no conversion option. I understand how to add/edit ship classes in the editor (i've added HMS Agincourt & HMS Eagle as a ship and class) but i have no clue how to add in a conversion option into a class.[:(] So can someone give me some instructions of how to add a conversion option to a class of warship like the Omaha Class?

Thanks,

Jason

P.S. also if i add/creat a conversion upgrade will it work and become available with a campaign in progress or only with a new campaign?

you need to use the binds. Look at a class that converts to get the idea. Be sure to choose a unique bind value for your conversion.

As this is a db change as opposed to an exe change, db change rules apply. Meaning, the option to convert will only appear if the class has an upgrade to perform B4 the convert option is visible. In other words, dicey.

To create ship conversions, you must first select a 3-digit (100-999) Bind Class Value. In the editor, on the ship class screen, there is a box with a tab marked "Refresh Convert To/From Binds". Clicking this tab, the box will show all the current Bind Values.

Below the Bind Value box, you will see another tab labeled "Enter a value to Bind Classes". Underneath this tab, there is another box; this is where you enter your desired Bind Value.

To the left of the box in which you enter your desired Bind Value, you will see two check boxes, labeled, from top to bottom, "Convert From Class" and "Convert To Class".
Checking the box labeled "Convert From Class" means the ship class can be converted to a new class.
Checking the box labeled "Convert To Class" identifies the ship class as one that the original class can be converted to.

Exampe:

Historically, the Oglala(CM-4), was capsized and sunk at Pearl Harbor. At first decommissioned and written off as a total loss, the decision was made to salvage her, and convert her to an engine repair ship. Finally raised on 3 July 1942, she sailed to California on 23 December 1942. After spending all of 1943 being repaired and refitted, she was recommissioned on 28 Feb 1944 as ARG-1.

To represent this conversion in game -
1) Go to the desired original ship class screen (in this example, 745 Oglala)
2) Select Bind Value (for my mod, I chose 600)
3) Enter selected Bind Value in box (underneath tab labeled "Enter a value to Bind Class")
4) Check box labeled "Convert From Class"
5) Go to the desired new ship class screen (in this example, 835 Oglala ARG, a new class I created)
6) Enter the same selected Bind Value in box (undereneath tab labeled "Enter a value to Bind Class")
7) Check box labeled "Convert To Class"
Optional:
8) Enter desired value in box labeled "Conversion Delay" (this is the number of days the ship will be undergoing conversion)
9) Enter desired value in box labeled "Upgrade Shipyard Size" (this is minimum shipyard size required for the conversion)
10) Save file in desired slot

When I start a new game and select Oglala,I will now have the option to convert her to an AG.

Also, you must decide whether to include future upgrades with the conversion. Using your original example of Omaha-class CL to CLAA, note that the Omaha-class has 3 ship IDs in the editor, 1 at-start and 2 upgrades, as follows:
407 12/41
408 4/42
409 4/43
If you want both conversion and upgrade options, you must enter the Bind Value and check "Convert From Class" box on all 3 ship class screens. If you want a choice - upgrade or conversion - only enter the Bind Value and check "Convert From Class" box on the desired screens. (ie- if you only select 407, then in 4/42 you can either upgrade or convert, but if you upgrade you will not later be able to convert)

Hope this helps.

Just watch out for numbers for binding class, because they seems to not be sorted in any order. You have 200s, then some 600s, and then again 200s. Make sure new class is not used earlier.

And the only difference between conversion, and upgrade seems to be, that the first is not used by AI. So you can safely use upgrade in most cases.

The Bind Values are listed in order starting with the ship class ID number; Bind 505 is listed before Bind 356 because 505 includes ship class 181, while 356 includes ship class 250.

The following in a list of Bind Values used at-start:

104 - 109
121 - 122
131 - 140
151 - 160
194 - 199
200 - 224
351 - 399
501 - 514
555

The 400s, 600s, 700s, 800s, and 900s are all available for use, as are any numbers not included in the list above.
