Observations Regarding the AI at Normandy

Post by Hanal »

I want to begin by pointing out that I am aware the programming an AI for offensive action is more difficult than defensive but I do wonder if it is possible to perhaps fine tune what is already present in PC. During the Normandy campaign I noticed the following:

1. Too many Allied units entered adjacent Axis controlled city hexes in transports making
them vulnerable.
2. Allied Artillery units advanced as if they were front line troops, also moving to
adjacent Axis held cities. Once again, easy pickins'.
3. Only two Allied units attacked Paris, and even though all of the Axis controlled cities
west of Paris to the coast were unoccuppied, no Allied units ever moved into the
region to occupy them. No air strikes were conducted against my garrisoned troops
in Paris.
4. Allied armor units adopted the 1940 French plan of attacking as separate units. It did
not feel as if there were enough ground forces repesented in the attacks, though the
Allied air support was good. It seems the "defensive" AI conducted combined
attacks better than the "offensive" AI.
5. It appeared that too many Allied units would advance to an Axis unit and not attack.
Since there were usually no ambush counter attacks, I am presuming that they simply
failed to take the opportunity to do so.

I was playing the General level, and managed a decisive victory. Now perhaps the hardest level will be a different experience all together which is what I will be doing when the latest patch becomes official.
Anyway just a few thoughts but it has been quite a blast to play and am looking forward to the challenge of the most difficult level!
