Asterisk In Air Group Commanders Screen?

In the screen where you manage a given air group, if you click on the name of the commander to view his statistics and possibly choose a new commander (in exchange for political points), sometimes one or more of the possible commanders has his rank marked with an asterisk. Does anyone know what this means?

It means the commander is not an active pilot (does not fly missions).

I think commander mark with asterisk is also a pilot. But you don't know what kind of pilot he is, and you might not want to elite torpedo bomber pilot fly fighter plane...

I recall discussion right after releasing of AE (but I think it was abouth ship commanders), and it was something around the lines, that commander with asterix is randomly generated, because there was not enough historical commanders in database at that date.
