Question re Recce units

If you send Recce units forward with an "Avoid" command are they able to show up the position of enemy units without necessarily becoming involved in combat themselves.
And in more general terms what are the best ways of using such units to spot the enemy without paying the price of an early demise.
I have always found in all these sorts of games that using Recce productively and keeping them alive is one of rthe most difficult of tactics----any advice from experienced cavalry officers would be much appreciated.

Try setting Low aggro, ROF and losses. That way it won't fire when it runs into something scary, and you should get a warning if it is in danger of taking losses.
